Hundreds of Amazon packages found dumped in Oklahoma on New Year's Eve
NBC News
Nearly 600 Amazon packages that were supposed to have been delivered by Christmas were found dumped outside Oklahoma City on New Year's Eve, authorities said.
The packages were discovered in a rural area about 30 miles northeast of the city, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office said Monday on Facebook.
Tracking information showed that the packages left an Amazon location and were supposed to have been taken to a U.S. Postal Service facility for delivery, the sheriff's office said.
"Someone had removed the items they wanted and discarded the rest," the sheriff's office said. "(Apparently the thief isn’t much of a reader...the books that were being delivered were left behind)."
The post added: "If you’re missing a package, please don’t call us. We are working with the USPS and have reached out to Amazon, so someone should contact you soon."
Several users responded by saying their missing Christmas gifts had most likely wound up with the cargo. [one can send a gift card purchased on Amazon electronically].
An Amazon spokesperson said the company is working closely with the sheriff's office and declined to comment further.
In Alabama, a similar discovery was made in November, when a FedEx contractor is alleged to have dumped about 400 packages in a ditch.
The driver, who was fired the day after the discovery, was arrested Dec. 10 on suspicion of cargo theft.
Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon said the man "was very sorrowful for what he had done and just admitted that he had had — was having some hard times in his life and just made poor choices.”

I'm hoping that the driver(s) would be able to be tracked somehow. Everything is barcoded in one way or another--even if it isn't trackable by the recipient.

@gertrudecloset Saw this on the news last night. Just shaking my head. Remember the 2nd incident as well. That jerk should do jail time. A lot of it.

I don't watch a lot of news anymore, but I often catch these quick headline pieces in the mornings on HLN and they showed this. Wow!
This needs to stop happening. It seems like something could be done AND they need to start prosecuting the drivers who are doing this stuff.

LUTHER, Okla. (KFOR) Sheriff’s officials say they have made a break in the case.
Authorities have arrested three people tied to the theft ring, which spans multiple states.
While investigating the packages, deputies found a garbage bag at the scene that had an envelope with an address and a receipt from a local store.
Investigators obtained a warrant for a home in the 200 block of S. Birch St. in Luther. Once inside the home, officials found thousands of undelivered Amazon packages.
In fact, they say some were still wrapped on pallets.
Authorities say the packages were stored throughout the home in almost every room and even filled the storm shelter.
Investigators allege that Cesar Yasnier Cerqueira Rojas, an immigrant illegally in the US from Cuba, was working as a third-party driver for Amazon, using a truck owned by 37-year-old Dinneris Matos Delgado.
Detectives believe Rojas loaded the extra pallets on the truck and brought them to the home.
Officials also arrested 38-year-old Maikel Perez Laurencio. All three are facing 15 felony counts of possession of stolen property and embezzlement. Delgato is also facing a charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
However, investigators believe more charges will be filed.
Capt. Robert Tye says the sheriff’s office is working directly with Amazon in order to get the missing packages to their final destinations.
“Literally, we recovered thousands of packages yesterday that a 26-foot U-Haul box truck that they brought out there was packed completely full,” said Capt. Tye, with the sheriff’s office.
On Wednesday morning, Capt. Tye says they were alerted to a second dump site in the Luther area. As a result, he says he believes there will be more packages sent back to Amazon in the coming days.
Capt. Tye says that most of the packages recovered were not from the metro area, but he stresses Oklahomans should not call the sheriff’s office to determine if their package was recovered. He says all of them have been sent back to Amazon.

OCSO was advised and a patrol deputy responded.
Another dump location was learned on NE 178th near Hogback where a LPD unit located it that same evening. Several empty Amazon packages were again located.
On 1-4-22 LPD assisted in execution of a search warrant in the 200-B of S. Birch were large amounts of goods were located that were believed to have been stolen.
Early this morning LPD received a call regarding a third dump site at Booker T. Washington Park were again more empty Amazon packages were located.
Through collaborated work with LPD, MASE Task Force members and the Oklahoma County Sheriffs Office three people were taken into custody with possible additional arrests likely and criminal charges pending.

@MorningLover thanks for adding even more detail to the story. This isn't just some drivers not wanting to work or tired at the end of their shift. This is a crime syndicate. Wow...likely the tip of the iceberg too.
Thank you.
