~ Humane Society and SPCA ~

Could someone please tell me what the difference is between these 2 organizations? I know the Humane Society operates purely on donations whereas the SPCA get some government subsidies.

I help out with the Humane Society and I notice some contention toward the SPCA. I don't understand that since both organizations are working toward the same goal.

Anyone enlighten me?
