Well, it probably wouldn't have bothered me too much Without knowing about the "sister" and the visit w/her nieces (maybe they weren't local and they hadn't seen each other for years and it was a short window of time to meet with them, etc., etc.,), it might have been that the friend's "sister" was supposed to help out with paying. With her out of the picture, your friend still wanted to make your day special and thought she could swing it on her own, but just didn't have enough to cover it all.

Anyway, good intentions and all. Hope you had a nice day despite the lunch, and Happy Birthday!

Your friend sounds elderly and perhaps isn't as "with it" as she used to be. It was nice that she wanted to take you out, even if she didn't plan things very well. She was probably embarrassed when she came up short. I'd drop this and not dwell on it. Not really a big deal.

You suggested "dutch." Even if she declined that, why are you bent out of shape when it ended up that way? Sometimes a birthday with yourself is better than not. I hope your future ones are better.

Happy Birthday! And no, I don't think you are wrong to feel irked, it's normal. I would, too! Especially with all you have gone through lately, it would have been nice to have been treated to a "normal" lunch.

I think many times people have good intentions, but then they can't follow through.

It's okay though...good times are ahead! Just keep thinking positively.

Happy Birthday, Jules. I completely understand. I have had a few "dud" birthdays where it turned out it would have been better to just spend them by myself. Your friend did mean well, but fell short on following through. Try to focus on the positive, even though the situation is very frustrating.
