I use downy odor defence . just use a tablespoon for each load. my clothes come out smelling clean. I don't use any liquid fabric softener, just the odor defence.

Fabreze has a scent called clean laundry. Maybe spraying the sheet closet vs. right on the sheets would work. Or the carpet ?

If I want some scent I add the Downy Unstopables or Gain’s version. You can control the scent level by how much you use. A little goes a long way and the scent last’s for weeks like advertised.

If this is off topic, please ignore and please don't comment:
Anyone else here hear about tweens eating T*de detergent laundry balls/pods? (Probably other brands, too.) I haven't seen a thread here yet, but when discussing with others on a morning walk, we were speechless. I seriously can't figure out their thinking. Oh, well. Thanks for listening. Maybe someone else will start a thread, if it's permitted.
Lots of good suggestions here re: fresh smelling laundry!

Any tips or tricks? Thanks!
As I said on the towel thread I never use fabric softener, just Purex and if it doesn't get rinsed well some white vinegar. laundry is fine

I have fleece sheets and the instructions said dry at low heat with no softener. I’m in an apartment with a coin washer and dryer in the basement....the dryer doesn’t have a low setting.
So...I use Gain washing pods, which have a nice scent. When the sheets come out of the washer the spinning has them partially dry. I set up a drying rack in my spare bedroom, loop them over the arms, and let them air dry. If I wash them in the morning, by late afternoon they are dry using this method.
They always have a light, fresh scent.

Thanks, @Zhills. I use unscented detergent and unscented fabric softener, and never have a problem with my laundry smelling "unfresh." But I'd like to use your vinegar suggestion on some towels that could be a LOT softer and fluffier. I know never to use fabric softener on towels, but can't wait to try the vinegar.

Add ammonia to the wash cycle. Follow directions on label.

I agree about the white vinegar. I've used it for years and am completely satisfied. Also much cheaper...Less than $5 for 2 gallons at Sams Club. Can't beat it!!
