"Retirement" is like beauty...in the eye of the beholder. What is "enough" money to one person, another person's life will be totally different. You can plan until the cows come home. And follow a "textbook" plan, whatever that is. But life happens. Be itjob loss(s) illnesses, death, divorce, a sick child, sick parent...a ton of things can and will occur to most. As "happy" housewife is already retired, based only on the things I have seen her post, I would rather be poor as dirt when my retirement comes way down the road...than have her miserable attitude toward most everything. You cannot buy a warm heart, kindness, seeing the glass as half full, gratitude. My goal as life moves foward, when the time comes for me to retire way down the road...is to not be the person that I have seen the OP show herself to be. That I could not take.

Amen~!

My only personal rule: Shoot me first if I ever suggest a 55 and over only community or I say something about joining the Red Hat Society.

Agree with your original statement, happyhousewife. We, too, live modestly and within our means. If you don't mind, about where, (generally speaking) do you live in Florida? If you find this too personal a question, I understand.

I live in a suburb of Sarasota. A beach community just to the south -pretty much a retirement town - not a lot of younger folks here - but very nice for retirees.

A nice area that you are in; we are in central Florida. There are many ways to go in Florida; some like the beach, some prefer to be more inland. Some like to live in a gated community, some in mobile home parks, some live in RVs all winter. Some would like to travel a lot when they retire and save for that. Some just prefer to stay in their own hometown. We're all different.

Seems to me that it would be a good idea to keep working even when you start to collect your SS checks. That way you have a large raise in pay every month. People can save major amounts of money in no time.

And what about me?

How much do I need to travel around the world? Smile

An around the world cruise costs about $35K-85K depending on the cabinSmile I've been doing some research{#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

How long?

My in-laws did 60 days in Europe 2 years ago for their 50th anniversary, budget was 50K. They came in slightly under that figure.

I think one that I was looking at was 85 days. I like to dream big! I think however, if I was on a cruise ship for that long they'd have to roll me off the ship{#emotions_dlg.lol}

Re: How much do you need to retire?

I HATE when someone says you NEED "X" amount of dollars for this and "X" amount of dollars for that. People shouldn't go by these blanket analysis'. What may work for some may not work for others. The cost of living varies from state to state, and region to region.

Either that, or spend equal amounts of time in the Fitness Center as one does in the restaurants and dining venues. Smiley Happy

I'd like to do a Christmas River Cruise in Europe in the next year or two.

Same to ya! Don't let the door hit ya!

You have to agree with everything OP puts out there. Or be called rude.

I know. Smiley Happy She threatened to put me on ignore well over a year ago . . . I'd have to say I disagree with her about 99.9% of the time. Smiley Happy
