Re: How much do you need to retire?

It all depends on what you plan on doing when you retire and how long you want to work.

We want to buy a new boat and travel. We will either stay in our current home or buy something small with less maintenance. We aren't planning on SS, just our earned income that is going into investments. We've been working with a financial planner for a while and saving as much as we can. I won't give a $$ amount because it's nobody's business{#emotions_dlg.w00t}

that is coming out of far left field. okie dokie.

actually I'd prefer NOT to live @ the beach OR a lake house. the sand tracked in would drive me crazy.

I'd prefer the mountains.

You totally missed the point.

Re: How much do you need to retire?

Seems to me that it would be a good idea to keep working even when you start to collect your SS checks. That way you have a large raise in pay every month. People can save major amounts of money in no time.

And what about me?

How much do I need to travel around the world?

Not everyone has this choice - people become disabled - how long can a person who does hard physical labor continue to work ? It is a good plan for a person who sits in an office on a computer but that is not everyone's reality.

Re: How much do you need to retire?

It is my opinion that people should be able to retire if they live within their means and stop useless spending and high credit card bills and only use credit cards for emergencies. Lots of people waste money. (another thing that comes to mind are high cellphone bills). Now some people have unexpected things happen like health issues, that cant be helped. Im talking about the average person that over spends their whole life and has nothing to show for it. That is a lot of people in this country (believe it or not). My dad had a saying, if you cant afford it you DONT buy it. Its THAT simple and my husband and I live by that as much as we can.

Re: How much do you need to retire?

"Retirement" is like beauty...in the eye of the beholder. What is "enough" money to one person, another person's life will be totally different. You can plan until the cows come home. And follow a "textbook" plan, whatever that is. But life happens. Be itjob loss(s) illnesses, death, divorce, a sick child, sick parent...a ton of things can and will occur to most. As "happy" housewife is already retired, based only on the things I have seen her post, I would rather be poor as dirt when my retirement comes way down the road...than have her miserable attitude toward most everything. You cannot buy a warm heart, kindness, seeing the glass as half full, gratitude. My goal as life moves foward, when the time comes for me to retire way down the road...is to not be the person that I have seen the OP show herself to be. That I could not take.

How long?

My in-laws did 60 days in Europe 2 years ago for their 50th anniversary, budget was 50K. They came in slightly under that figure.

Do you need to worry about this issue? Thought you had a space ship at your disposal?
