We have had ours for several months and have had no problems. Just an alternative to Microsoft.
Chrome updates. However it does it the background. Oh yeah! I use Chrome all the time instead of Firefox and yes it does update. So,since Chrome is running Google (probably) you bet it updates.

Yes, @itiswhatitis, you are right. You also get Chrome updates with the Chromebook, too.
You'll see a little "up" arrow in the lower right-hand corner of your Chromebook, where the clock and battery indicator window are, when you need to update it.
When you close out your Chromebook and go to shut it down, it will install the latest update then. It's really easy to do it then. ![]()

I'm a Mac person. I can't count the ways I hate Microsoft, even though I strictly used Microsoft products until I purchased my first Mac about 5 or 6 years ago. But, I have to have a Windows machine for some of my sewing software. I bought a new Windows laptop two years ago and it came with Windows 8. BIG MISTAKE. Every time I turned that laptop on I had issues.
So, I shoved it into a closet and went back to my Windows 7 machine for my sewing. For "real life" I use an iMac, iPad, iPhone, etc.
My husband cleaned up the mess in my newer laptop and installed Windows 10 for me and cleaned up all of the bugs with updates. I do have to say that Windows 10 is a big improvement and my laptop is now usable.
However, I still like the features on my iMac much better than anything Microsoft has ever developed, and recently found some sewing and embroidery software that is geared to Mac. Goodbye Windows laptop! I'll chalk that one up to a slightly expensive mistake that I won't repeat. ![]()

Wow what a mess. And I agree about Microsoft. Because I can tell you that I absolutely hate Windows 10! I know computers pretty well and I got this new laptop a few weeks ago, and I have had nothing but trouble with 10. I called a friend of ours that builds data bases and works with Windows 10 at work and he even said Windows 10 is horrible. (He only uses MAC computers at home!)

I installed Windows 10 as soon as the free download was available and haven't had any problems so far. **Fingers crossed** I actually like it much better than Windows 8. I didn't like the browser so I use Firefox.

Still, if I were CEO Mr. Z of Apple, I'd find a way to offer a competitive replacement for MS. Yes, that's what I'd do. And I'd make more billions and make many more thankful customers. Whoever/whomever finds a MS replacement will be 'in the money'. MS's W10 present approach is counter-productive, public relations-wise. Good public relations is paramount in the advertising world. Well, it used to be..........

I've had my share of disgust with Microsoft and I am suspicious that they use certain "tactics" to boost their bottom line without regard for the user.
I was thinking about getting a Chromebook, but don't really understand the concept of "cloud computing" even though I started reading about it. It seems to me there is a security issue with it in that a third party provider is privy to your work. So if I understand this correctly, this third party....and potentially any and all users on the cloud....could read your documents, see your photos, etc. Why would I want that? (if anyone can answer)

Hi @SaRina
I can't use a Chromebook here as I use my computer more extensively than a Chromebook would allow. It sounds like a Chromebook might be perfect for your needs, if you can feel comfortable with the security issue.![]()
There are extra steps available beyond the cloud password protection. Here's some info I read on this:
