How does one improve/correct a bad credit rating?

Well, I know how to 'improve' a bad credit rating - but here's the dilemma: My daughter's a/c unit when out and the cost will be $4300.00. She applied for a loan but was turned down because of past problems. She has a great paying job now and pays her bills in a timely manner now. She asked me "How do you get rid of a bad credit rating?" I have no idea. Can anyone make any suggestions? Thanks.
