I have several reasons for using the hearts.  Sometimes I will insert a heart inside a message to a poster......just to let them know I really care about that poster, or the posters that are on at that moment. 

Use them to let a poster know I agree with what they just said......

And, use them to let the posters know that I am here.......

I use them for posters I like and what I like what they have to say.

SRSLY... It is the ONLY way to find my way back (quickly) to what I have posted.

If someone wants to let me know that they have

1) posted on the same thread

2) wants to get me NOW (like an IM or PM) it 

   Shows up right away... More fun/easier

I GET LOST WITHOUT THEM AND CAN'T FIND MY WAY AROUND ... NOT KIDDING

@I'm confused. If someone wants to let you know that they have posted on the same thread or wants to get your attention, wouldn't they use the @ just as you did here?

Indicate to posters with whom I spar that I'm happy when we agree, even if that's not often

Acknowledge thoughtful comment but do not agree
