Re: How do you pronounce water

[ Edited ]

HLP,

We are less than a decade apart.  I missed out on you, I'm sorry to write.

Do you mind sharing where you taught in Maryland?

Before my first marriage, I taught for a brief time in the city of Baltimore, but then we moved to Washington, D.C., and I continued my editing/writing career there.

ETA:  Thank you for your love of Maryland students and your dedication to their learning.  I know you were dedicated if you focused on their pronunciation of "water" among all your objectives.

How about wash? Some people seem to add an r in there and it comes out warsh. Whats with that?

It's a regional dialect, or regional way of speaking.

I grew up in the upper Midwest.

My Dad grew up in the Great Plains.

It's a common way of speaking there. He would say "warsh" for "wash."

Re: How do you pronounce water

I'm from NJ.  I pronounce water "waw ter" accent on the waw.

Coffee is "caw fee" accent on the caw.

Wash is wash, not warsh.

Dog is "dawg".

Soda is soda, not pop or tonic.

I'm from central NJ so I don't think the accent is as pronounced as it is in some areas outside the City.  Just certain words give my origin away.

Oh, one more word I forgot -

Horrible is "harr ible" accent on the harr

and Roof is "rufe" or "rooooof" not ruff
