How about wash? Some people seem to add an r in there and it comes out warsh. Whats with that?

Grew up in what is now referred to as Central Maryland; however, when I was younger, my region was referred to as Western Maryland. Area settled primarily by the British and Germans.
One's accent is most likely linked to the mother tongue of local inhabitants.

Initially, I learned how to pronounce words from my parents, then in school. They learned "standard" American English, too, sometimes called "newscaster" English.
The "wa" in water is similar to the "wa" in wall and Washington.

I pronounce it wah-ter.
I have a friend who says worter and cawfee. She's from the East Coast.

my mom is from PA and she pronounces it 'woooooooter' It drives me insane! hahaha.

Martha used to pronounce it with a "H" in front. I haven't watched her in a really long time so maybe she doesn't do this any more.
