Re: How do you pronounce caramel?

According to Webster -- "car-a-mel" is the preferred pronunciation.

Just like it’s spelled!

Take the two names, “Cara” and “Mel,” and combine them:  car-a-mel. Three syllables.

~~Be careful when you follow the masses. Sometimes the 'm' is silent.~~

Whichever way would disqualify me from being a Q host for reasons of improper pronunciation.

I pronounce it with two syllables.

Around here it sounds like kar-mll.

Accent on the kar followed by m sliding into a hard midwestern L.

No vowel sound in the second syllable.

Re: How do you pronounce caramel?

My 9th grade English teacher corrected me and told me that the correct pronunciation was cara mel. I have pronounced it that way since. No car-mel because that is a place not a candy. (according to Mrs. Nader) LOL

Re: How do you pronounce caramel?

Always cara-mel. I don't know anyone in the deep South that pronounces it car-mel.

Must be a 'regional' thing.

care-a-mel.

I pause just a bit before I say it and pronounce it in my head first.

But, I hear it pronounced all sorts of way.

Isn't it funny how some teacher quotes stick with you forever?
