How do you feel about holiday bonuses?

My youngest daughter is a web designer/graphic artist.

Her full time employer gave her a $100 gift card.

Her freelance client for whom she works from home part time at night gave her a $1,000 check.

Do you feel a bonus should be expected? Are you just as satisfied if you get no bonus at all? Does anyone have a right to criticize their bonus?
