Re: How do you choose a book, besides a favorite author?

One of my favorite ways of finding books I like is browsing the tables at Book Fairs or library Book Sales. This past weekend I discovered Linda Lay Shuler's Voice of the Eagle (written in 1992). There was no jacket on the book to give a hint of its storyline, but I was hooked by the first sentence on the Acknowledgments page: "This is a book of fiction recreating an ancient past where no written record exists." The second paragraph mentioned an anthropologist sent to New Mexico by the Smithsonian Institution in 1879 to learn bout the Zunis. I've always enjoyed speculating about what daily life was like in other places and other times (especially when I'm overdosed on REALITY here and now!), and I like to read fiction where someone else has speculated, especially when their speculations are backed up by scholarship and whatever research is available.

I really like the site GoodReads. You plug in your favorite authors and books and it'll find books you might enjoy. A lot of the time, it's correct. I also like using the site to check on books before I buy them. I once made the mistake of buying a book that I ended up hating 100 pages in - never again!

Re: How do you choose a book, besides a favorite author?

Sometimes I get recommendations from family & friends, sometimes I read the reviews in Amazon. I have a subscription to Bookmarks magazine which is both good & not so good: I learn about many new books & authors, but now my reading list is miles long!{#emotions_dlg.laugh} As the saying goes, so many books, so little time. I keep promising myself to spend half of my retirement years reading - if I ever get to retire.
