@cherry I've heard that gas station owners-that they do not make money from gas sales but from the sales of food and other items sold in insde.
I believe the $$ made from ticket sales in theaters goes back to the movie studio.
It makes sense-how would the movie studio make a profit without ticket sales??

Went to Downton Abbey matinee and it was $12.99 each for reserved seats.
Our snacks (Curley fries, sodas, etc.) was triple that. Lol
ETA - this was in DC.

For new release movies in the lounge chair seating near me (SE PA) the cost was $25.00 for a pair of tickets. I don't know about the snacks since I never buy them and I bring my own water.

58% of people sneak snacks and drinks into movie theaters. I thought it would be higher than that. LOL

Thanks for so many replies and may I say YIKES? LOL!!! When it's $30 for a movie and a drink and snack now. Although I'm not surprised really.
I remember the old days of $6 and $8 tickets. But mainly I am old and there aren't many movies I really want to see, so that's part of the equation for me. I am not really that excited to see Downton Abbey although I loved the series on PBS.

$5.50 for the first showing of a movie for the day. After that I have no idea.

I haven't bought a ticket in almost 40 years.
But, I just went to AMCs website to see prices in NYC.
$18-25+ for ticket alone for an adult, depending on regular, 3D, IMAX

More than we are willing to pay. LOL

Yes. And the last time I saw a movie in a regular chain theater, the popcorn and drink I bought cost twice as much as the ticket. I don't remember the numbers, just that it was twice as much.
