I live in MA and that should tell you all you need to know. It's pitch black @ 4:30 in the afternoon. 32 degrees would be a nice day, we'd say "oh, it's cold but not too cold today". I believe average temps in Dec are in high 20's to mid 30's but of course, temps can be in the teens and single digits or even the 40's. We can have rain, snow, sleet, ice storms; whatever Mother Nature throws our way. I owned one DB faux fur and it was too light and not nearly warm enough for Dec through Feb. I wear my puffy jackets but not those "cute girl" ones that just for fashion. I wear serious puffy jackets meant for warmth and scarves and gloves. As for snow, 2-4 a year made me smile. It's been snowing lightly since last night, so we'll get that much today. We can get over 100 inches of snow but I think average snowfall for a year is around 40 inches.

I live in north central Ohio on the lake. How harsh our winters get vary from year to year. I do not live in the snowbelt or even in the secondary snowbelt. Some years we still get a lot of snow but not as much as other areas.
I don't need any type of special outerwear because I don't work outside nor do I have to walk far from my car into work or wait for a bus. My car is in my garage, I drive about 5 minutes to work and my parking space is the third from the door.
99% of the time I'm going from a car into a building so no big, heavy, bulky puffer coats, faux fur, etc. needed.

I'm in So. California. Just light jackets or long sleeve sweaters at night. Usually it's in the 70s or 80s during the day. It does get chilly at night. I rarely get cold anymore, so sometimes I get away with 3/4 sleeve sweaters.

I live in Northern NJ. The weather has been not bad here. It is 48 degrees. December is going to be much colder. January is usually the coldest month. It can get 9 degrees. I have been wearing a heavy sweater with a lined raincoat. I will find a winter coat tomorrow. I hate winter coats, once you put them on they never come off.

Central Pennsylvania here. It can get ugly with cold, wind, snow and ice. I hate winter.
I walk between 3 and 4 miles every day during my lunch hour at work. In the dead of winter, when the wind is howling and there's snow and ice on the ground, it probably takes me longer to get dressed for my walk and then back into my work clothes than it does for my actual walk. Long underwear, pants, wind pants, heavy socks, snow sneakers, my YakTrax (for walking on ice), long underwear top, t-shirt, scarf, my Columbia winter jacket, ear muffs, and heavy gloves. Sunglasses.
Til I'm dressed I feel like the wife of the Michelin Man.....and I probably move like her, too! But I really hate being cold, so I do what I have to do.
I'd much rather walk in 85-degree weather than in below freezing weather. And when it's sleeting, well, I'll still go out. It's actually kind of peaceful.

I live in South Texas and not much of a winter. Usually sweaters but you may regret it as sometimes it's cold in the morning and hot by the time you get out of work and vice versa. I don't think we ever have a consecutive week of cold weather.

My goodness, there sure are a lot of hearty, strong people across our country! Good for them!

I live in Central Florida and a hoodie or sweatshirt weight jacket is my go-to winter outerwear when it is "cold." I've got a beautiful suede jacket (Iman) but there aren't many days cold enough to wear it. Most days I complete my outfit with a lightweight sweater.
I dont own gloves, scarves, or heavy boots meant to keep me warm.

Hi @ECBG
We're warmer than you here in the Piedmont...I own exactly one coat! It's a wool, hooded, clutch coat in navy from Vince...I think it's what is known as car coat length...falls between lower thigh and just above knee. I wear it once in a great while when the temps here are actually cold enough. Mostly, I get by with layering and fleece poncho/wraps that I make. I had a thread showing how to make it...I'll see if I can find it and notify you.
I'm from Michigan, so the cold, wintery weather here in NC is kind of a chuckle...yes, I'm a da%%ed Yankee!
