Mrs. Richard Doe is a social signature.  Technically, it is not a legal signature.  If she signs her checks as Mrs, Richard Doe, the bank does not have to honor it.  Her legal name would be Jane Doe.

After marriage I signed Susie L. Marriedname.

I've always preferred to just be called by my first name by *most* people. 

I have a favorite checker at my local Safeway who I am quite friendly with. For years he called me Mrs. Marriedname. I finally one day said "Just call me Susie".

Of course Susie is NOT my real name!

@CrazyKittyLvr2   Funny you should mention this. My husband and I were just talking about this the other day. Whenever I call a business I always say my first and last name, never Mrs. whatever.  My husband always says this is Mr. whatever. I told him he should not be so formal. I also sign my name with my first initial and last name (married) because my married name is so long both my 1st and last name won't fit on checks. I have never signed anything Mrs. I see Mrs. as being more formal. I am a casual type person.

DesertDi, Family name, Marriage Name.   It's the "legal way" in California.

If I just used "DesertDi, Marriage Name"...........well, there's more than a few of us in AZ with the same "first and last" names..........    In this day and age of "identity theft"........I sign the whole works on paper.

It's my understanding that your signature doesn't have to be spelled like your legal name, for instance your married name. A signature is merely a marking on paper used to identify/verify a person's identity.

Very interesting question.  Times have really changed.  I have not signed anything as Mrs. John Smith many, many years.   I love an adore my husband but I did not stop being an individual when I married him.  We had a joint checking account when I was a sahm and he was the wage earner but when I started working, we each had our own checking and savings accounts.  Although we do keep a joint checking for household repairs   We sign cards  Crystal and John Smith.

All my kid's friends called me Mrs. ________ as I volunteered at their school. 

So, as old as they are now, they still call me Mrs.,--and I like it!

When I send greeting cards to older relatives and friends, it's hard to know whether to address the envelope to Mrs. John Smith, or Mary Smith.  I've always assumed Mrs. John Smith is better - more formal, more respectful - especially for that age group,  But maybe I need to rethink that.
