Someone sent an adorable picture to my FB page and if I like it, I press the "like" icon. Otherwise, I ignore it. In the meantime, someone wrote a vile and vulgar comment about the person and photo. I was totally shocked and disgusted. My first instinct was to respond, but decided that a response would just add fuel to the fire.
In my world, no one talks or acts that way, and I can't understand the reasoning behind such disrespect. I just texted my daughter and asked her why someone would do such a thing, and she said they are attention seekers (even if it is negative.) She said, "Don't feed the trolls."
I don't like to think that this kind of meanness is something that we just have to accept as part of the internet. I wish FB had some sort of control over profanity and disrespectful comments. Or, I wish my computer had some sort of filter that would not allow those kind of comments. Having worked in the public schools, I know how much classroom time is spent talking with children about bullying. Then, students go online and read inappropriate comments like the one I mentioned. I pray that they've listened and learned that it is wrong and will ignore them.
