@Kachina624 We have given careful consideration to New Mexico. We will need to be in a major hub for medical services. That pretty much leaves Albuquerque and Las Cruces. We are looking at both, but know nothing about where to live in these two cities.

Many lovely 55+ apartment communities have been built in my area of Wisconsin in the last few years. I attended a grand opening tour through one of them before the pandemic. The buildings are nicely appointed with elevators, underground parking, in-apartment washer/dryer, and on-site management. The monthly rate was $1,800-$2,400 depending on the number of bedrooms. Although I could not afford to live there for very long, it was a very desirable environment.

That monthly rate is low compared to my area. Did it include at least one meal per day? Usually all utilities are included other than phone and internet and there is a twice-weekly house cleaner.

I did the 55+ search for our city. Two choices were presented but were income based. It seems like my area of Texas is similar to the area in PA that was mentioned earlier in the thread in not offering the apartment category. It does have plenty of good assisted living facilities.
We are considering a major move, but it is frightening and seems like a daunting task at our age. If your nic is about Washington, I found Vancouver, WA, and it is interesting. I like the idea of having abundant water. Do you know about it?

@tansy The monthly rates did not include a meal or housekeeping help.

@On It Las Cruces is a nice city but way too hot for me in the summer. Albuquerque has a nicer climate, central to so many things to see and do, close to Santa Fe and the Northern mountains, UNM medical facilities, big Presbyterian Hospital. I actually live in Rio Rancho which is adjacent to and North of the city, a newish city just incorporated 30 years ago. Lots of senior faci!cities here.
One bad thing about the state; there is a state income tax but property taxes are lower than Texas. It's a PIA though.

Several areas have passed laws preventing homeowners from adding apartments above their garages or modifying their homes in order to allow elderly family members to live there. It just reminds me how little regard our society now has for seniors in addition to infants.

I live in Show Low AZ where housing is still fairly affordable, especially for condos. We have a nice new hospital and lots of access for full medical services in Phoenix ( we are 4 seasons so Summer averages 22 degrees under Phoenix and Winters are.much milder than East Coast.or N.W.). I also go to Rio Rancho frequently and agree with Kachina's assessment.

Townhouses and apartments are going up in the Atlanta and surrounding Cities. They are new so people are trying to get in. Some of the rooms are small. Right now the going rate is $867 a month and it's about 720 sq feet for a one bedroom apartment.
The town houses are two stories and some people prefer those.
You have to apply even before they are built, they interview you and let you know if you qualify. They go so fast but they keep building.

Well, that's not good, @deepwaterdotter. I know you are a good cook and seem to enjoy it but I want the option of a prepared meal.
