@Puppy Galore wrote:I've always bought a plant/tree for their yard or garden. It's always been appreciated and often I've been thanked through the years. I bought a beautiful Rhododendron for a dear friends new doctors office.
You can find beautiful plants this time of year.
@Puppy Galore I would certainly want to know that they wanted a plant before I would give one. Absolutely. Lots of us don't have a place for a plant and do not want to add something to our yards. That means finding a place not in the way, worrying about where it should go and potentially mowing around it or watching it die.
A plant is one step below a kitten as a gift to me!
But if someone is into that it is a fabulous idea!!!!!

Oh my goodness, I have just the thing. Recently I showed a picture of a pretty glass candy (or other) dish that I was going to buy myself and @Oznell suggested buying a couple of them to keep in your gift closet and I think this would work perfectly as a house warming gift.
It's $10.00! I'd love to have it....who wouldn't and you could fill it up with wrapped truffles or other candy or not....
Also it's not about the gift it's about the thought and everyone has room for a pretty little jewel of a candy dish.

Godinger Hershey's Kisses Candy Box
Comes in clear and many other colors on other websites like Macy's
Since they are going from a larger to a smaller home even that small candy dish would most likely not be appreciated. I would feel obligated to show it. I would rather have something that I wouldn't have to decorate with like flowers.

@Biftu : Just my opinion: This is your friend's cousin and you want to give them something? For me: The gift giving list and giving is too much. I am in the process of reducing my list to just my family: no cousins , no friends or neighbors. Just give a beautiful house warming card. I finally persuaded friends to just get together for lunch: going out, or afternoon of cards or board games and serving coffee or tea and purchased snacks. No extra cooking, baking or cost.

My friend's newly married daughter just bought a beautiful condo.
I've been to the site many times while it was being built.
I noticed she didn't have a doormat (welcome mat). So I bought one from Home Depot, just so the contractors stepped on it before they entered. From that point on, they 'wiped' their feet.
She was so grateful. It wasn't one of those 'coir' ones, the kind that look like they're made out of brooms, yuck!
So when the house was completed, I bought a pretty one from Garnet Hill (QVC affiliate and NICE products, if you ask me).
It doesn't say WELCOME or anything, but has their initial embossed on it. Very practical, lots of colors to choose from and within your budget.
Maybe see if your cousin has a nice doormat?

@LizzieInSRQ wrote:I know you say no gift cards @Biftu but one to Home Depot would be very appropriate and on theme.
Even at $1.5 M they probably want to add personal touches like paint, gardening items, decor, accessories hardware, tools, and even holiday etc.
I know when I bought my one and only home that I was going to HD for all kinds of reasons.
@LizzieInSRQ I'm with you. HD gift cards were my best gifts when I bought my house. However, I doubt they have ever been in a HD. They seem to hire people to do everything for them.

In these days, a million dollar house is not that over-the-top anymore, but it does mean the couple is comfortable. Many people in those circumstances do have more than they need.
I agree, no food or gift cards as a housewarming gift for older friends.
IMO gift cards are always a bit tacky for prosperous adults--better given to younger people just starting out. Food can be tricky unless you know something they really love--a nice fruit basket could potentially work, but could cost a lot more. Godiva chocolates have just skyrocketed in price, but they were always one of my favorites to give as a gift.
I would not necessarily want a floral arrangement (can be costly), or anything to plant, because flowers die and become forgotten, and plants need ongoing care.
In many cases alcohol is a common gift, but I rarely drink either. Perhaps some champagne?
So, what you want is something lovely and memorable, yet still economical.
Dennis Basso faux fur throws are an excellent choice, because they are practical yet gorgeous. I have gifted these to everyone in my immediate family (but we all live in a four season climate with cold Winters).
Well, the QVC today's special value Barefoot Dreams blanket could be another option --I actually just purchased one as a gift for a neighbor with a new baby.
I like the lantern idea--Home Reflections here on QVC has a lot of options, with flameless candles. Item H490760 seems to be quite popular.
I would consider a candle by Harry Slatkin, but scent can be a tricky topic. However, I really like his candles that come in ceramic or hobnail jars, that can all be reused after the candles have melted. I have given his candles as gifts to many people when they came in those fancy ceramic shapes.
Perhaps a nice throw pillow could be another choice, if you find one that says new home or welcome home or similar. Again, fabric, color and design must be carefully considered. Horchow has many pillow ideas you can peruse.
Have fun shopping!
@FancyPhillyshopper You get it! Thanks for your suggestions, good suggestions. I did have the Barefoot Dreams throw in my cart but wasn't sure. Not sure if they know this brand and would appreciate what it is. Still thinking on this.

@Mz iMac wrote:@Biftu "My friend's cousin"
What is this "cousin" to you?
Me personally, nothing if no friend of mine. Just because they are my friend's cousin does not automatically make me their cousin's friend.
@Mz iMac I get it but I consider them my friends too. I've stayed at their house many times and they have stayed at mine. While we see them only a few times a year, we keep in touch by phone occasionally.
