Howard Clark is a great reference point to start when investigating insurance. He does a great deal of research in this area.He also lists the companies in order of what he believes are responsible, reputable and frugal. I also read an article that stated that every three of so years one must change insurance companies because their business model is such that they are on the search for new customers with the lower rates (sort of like cable companies) and are not in the business of rewarding longevity.

My agent told me premiums go up all over the country when disasters strike and not just where you live.
Premiums go up as the cost of rebuilding goes up.
Premiums go up when you do home improvements.

I don't understand all the hatred about CA? Is it political? I have seen this kind of thing before, and it seems to me no other state gets knocked like this.
For what it is worth, I feel very sorry for my Calif friends. they have suffered a great deal, with droughts , floods, and fires. I am still worried about my friend Noel and I wish I knew how she is
Hang tough CA

One thing that really rattles my cage is that if your credit score is low, they can charge you a higher rate. I don't get this at all.
So, if you are poor or have a low income and having trouble paying bills on time, they charge you more. Those people have a hard time to begin with without adding insult to injury.
I agree, but it's all about the risk.
I don't get the risk factor answer. Storms and high winds don't target those with low credit scores any more than those with high credit scores.
If you don't pay or CC or utility bills on time, what does that have to do with insurance?
My credit rating is over 800 now, but when I was in my 20's with three children, money was tight and paying bills on time was difficult. Insurance companies made our life even more difficult by charging us more.

I don't hate CA. We, in PA get flooded often. We had over 60 inches or rain, not including snow in 2018.
Home insurance does not cover floods. You need a separate flood policy for that purchased from the Government which is pretty expensive..higher than home insurance.
I wonder if those poor people in CA will ever have their home owners insurance not cover fires when they do not originate in the home, and will make them purchase fire insurance separately.

We have State Farm for homeowner's, car, and a renter's policy for my daughter.
Our homeowner's goes up a little bit each - nothing significant. Our car insurance - don't even get me started.

@SharkE ours went up about $100 this year. I assume all the people needing help from storms and the fires. I have Farmers Insurance in Washington State.
we did get a discount for putting on a new roof( our old roof was cedar shake) and we also replaced all the wood siding with a polymer siding.

YOU SAID: we just (all of sudden after 20 years) had the insurance company show up and want to take pictures of the home...thinking it is there way of seeing what improvements have been made so they can raise the rates.
You always should have all the current info on improvements and updated pictures of your home on file! .... if you had say a devestaing fire and your home needed to be totally rebuilt... you would want it replaced with all your updated improvements... otherwise you would only get the home rebuilt based on the old structure.
We always let them know what improvements we did and just last fall replaced the siding and roof ( $35,000 worth of improvements) . They gave us a discount credit for the new roof.
