Why would you want to walk barefoot to church?

Before it's mentioned, let me say that I know the show is scripted and staged. But the attitudes are very real. Recently had some young relatives out looking for their first home. No kids and no plans for any right away. They referred to this being their "starter" home. 8 rooms, 3000 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and an acre of land. Absolutely gorgeous place that most people would hope to get after maybe 20 years of wishing and hoping. They've taken on an enormous mortgage (the banks will give them to you but it doesn't mean it's a wise decision on your part). They'll be house poor but they have what they want when they want it which is how their parents (especially hers) raised them. And, yes, the beautiful country kitchen had to be immediately gutted for hardwoods and granite! {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

It is a terrible shame that realtors don't educate young home buyers about what is really valuable in a home and where they should be putting their focus - the heating and cooling - the plumbing and electrical and the roof, the foundation etc. They buy homes that will become huge money pits because someone decorated them in the current trends.

I have no idea- I was flummoxed. {#emotions_dlg.confused1} He said it was more comfortable, but unless you work at the church, who cares about someplace you go just on Sundays?

Most guys want a large garage, a space to grill, room for a man cave, or a large yard.

Re: House Hunters: Where Are They Now?

I saw something shocking on a House Hunters the other night. A young couple actually wanted white appliances instead of the currently popular stainless steel. It was refreshing.

Re: House Hunters: Where Are They Now?

I currently live in a plan of homes that were all built within the last 5 years. Mostly retirees as e live in Fl. Granite and hardwood were available options here but only a very small few bought them.I only know of one house that paid the extra for SS appliances. Almost everyone bought things like larger lanais and upgraded appliances and higher grades of windows, or upgraded heat pumps. When you become more mature most people are able to see past the showy , trendy items and put their money into what will give the house more value going forward.

DH bought the garage. I was lucky a house came with it!

I not sure how these young people can afford $500,000 on up houses, on their first house purchase.

It really all comes down to what state and city you live in...housing prices are (somewhat)in line with income...I paid nearly that much for my first house, a condo, and I am single with only one income....but in Southern California, you can't get a mini mansion like I see on those shows in other states, for $200K!!!!!!

Re: House Hunters: Where Are They Now?

Drama...it's what sells ratings....even on these types of shows.....but...on th eflip side...buyng a house is a major purchase...hands down the biggest purchase you will make in a lifetime so why not get exactly what you want.....but I hear you all....most of the whining is about cosmetic things like paint color, appliances, fixtures, etc.....I think it's hard to look past obvious disrepair....but don't understand the adversion about minor cosmetic repairs.
