I much prefer the shows that renovate older homes and/or decorate them.
The HH shows often have cookie cutter homes in boring developments - they all look alike after a while! And everyone wants stainless steel and granite!

I enjoy HHI particularly when it is in Europe. Not terribly interested in the Caribbean ones however. Regular American HH doesn't interest me at all.

So you will find graffiti in fairly nice parts of major cities in France, Italy, Spain, etc.. It's often political in nature or sometimes romantic.
I was in Trier, a city in Germany founded by the Romans. There is graffiti on the aquaducts,,,from the time the Romans ruled there, over 2,000 years ago!
Lots of ancient graffiti all over Europe. In Berlin some of the fanciest buildings have been painted on by artists and they're really cool.
Not cool to destroy property. People own those apartments and some strange person walks up to it with spray paint and decides to put his stamp on your home? I don't think so? I'm sure you'd love someone doing that to your home.![]()

You may not be interested, but it's the only version I care about. There's no law that says you have to watch it...is there?

The reason they buy the old properties, besides the history and character, is because of the HUGE tax breaks you get if you renovate. If you buy new, you pay the full VAT. A friend renovated an old farm house in France, and she saved about $150,000 by taking this route.

Have you seen the rents in major US cities? $2500 will get you a studio apt.

I was talking about some podunk town nowhere near a capital city.

I enjoy HHI. It's fun to see what housing and life are like in other countries, how much housing costs, etc. Housing is quite expensive in many places, but it's been surprisingly affordable in a few places they've featured. I always wonder what it would be like to leave familiar surroundings behind, move to another country, and have a whole new "life adventure".

I'm more interested in knowing how some of them can pay millions of dollars for properties that are vacation homes. ![]()

A young man we know, born in Saigon, but has been living in St. Paul, MN for 20 years. He said housing in Saigon is unbelievable. And that's apartments. He visits his parents once a year. Love watching this show. A fixer upper apartment in Rome is $300,000. Wow
