Going in the fall to a conference with hubby to Innsbruck then sight seeing around Austria & Switzerland. Any hotel/travel ideas would be appreciated. TIA

Lucky You!!!
Two places that I'd recommend, but each are in opposite directions from Innsbruk, are Salzburg, Austria and The Zugspitze.
In Salzburg (about a 2 hr. drive from Innsbruk), you can take in a Sound of Music Tour. If you're a fan of the movie, you'll see some familiar locations (Mirabel Gardens, the "Do-Re-Mi" steps, the ivy arbor, the horse fountain, etc. There's an open market, but there are all kinds of shops in the city center as well. It's kind of quaint to see the old shop signs that still hang out in front of some of them. Whether you're religious or not, or are of the same kind of church affiliation or not, the churches in the area are beautiful works of art, both in the architecture and the breathtaking artwork on the ceilings. You can also visit the Salt Castle. It popular and operates as a museum. The composer, Mozart, was from Salzburg so you'll see his face on a lot of things, especially some specialty candies.
The Zugspitze (about a 1.5 hr. drive from Innsbruk) is the tallest mountain peak on the German side of The Alps. I don't know where it ranks in Austria. On the German side, you ride a tram up to the top, but on the Austrian side, you can take a train. Going on the tram, you see a beautiful vista. If you want to, you can buy a ticket to ride down on the German side and then go back up. At the top of the mountain, it can get pretty chilly so be sure to have a jacket or coat with you. When I was there, it was 80°F and humid, in Munich, but it snowed up on the top of the mountain. On the German side, if you're a hiker, there are paths to walk up/down the mountain. I don't know if they have them on the Austrian side, but I'd bet they do. If you're interested, it's something you could research.
One last thing, if you can find a tour of a salt mine (likely in Salzburg, but there might be other options), I recommend you go. It's interesting to learn about salt mining, but there's a portion of the tour that's great fun and something you wouldn't experience here at home.
Have a wonderful time!

For Switzerland, besides Geneva, I would suggest visiting Lucerne, Bern, Gstaad and Interlaken.
The one hotel I would recommend is in Interlaken - the Victoria Jungfrau hotel. It is a beautiful old world type hotel, but has been modernized. I remember our room having the most comfortable down feather beds and floor to ceiling windows overlooking their gardens.
Have fun - Switzerland is absolutely beautiful.

Dollydogs, You need to go to Trip Advisor and check out the hotels in the towns you are visiting.
They rate from #1 back to the dregs, and you can find the hotel rated best at the price you will pay.
TripAdvisor has reviews from regular people who have stayed in hotels and one takes individual posts with a grain of salt, but I travel a lot, often on short notice, and have only had problems with reviews for the 3 star hotels. Four star + reviews give a good sense of the pluses and minuses of a property.
I rely totally on TripAdvisor when making reservations. They also recommend restaurants and sights in various towns. It's a little less random than asking here.

My favorite place in the world is a small hotel with a spa and restaurant in the Tyrol. It's called Pineta Hotel and Wellness located in Tavon, Italy. It's close to the Austrian border and worth a visit. Not everyone speaks English but several of the owners, who happen to be my cousins, do. Andreas, Nicola and Fabiana speak English extremely well and are so nice. Look it up, it's heaven on earth! The food is amazing and the spa is spectacular. There are relaxation rooms that are included in the cost of your room and the food is also included. Fabulous!!!!!

I have family in Innsbruck. I spent a lot of time there growing up. I don't know about hotels. I do remember the Goldenes Dachl in the center of the city was a nice hotel.
The city center of Innsbruck is very touristy, but still beautiful. Maria Theresienstrasse is a main shopping street.
You shouldn't miss taking the funicular up to the Hungerborg. Also, you can take a cable car further up to Hafelekar. Spectacular views. It shouldn't be missed.
There is a lot to do. But one idea is to drive south (if you have a car or you can take the train) from Innsbruck over the Brennerpass to Italy. It's one of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see. I would go as far as Bozen/Bolzano. You could do this as a day trip.
Salzburg has lots of pretty places to visit. Besides the city itself, one area that I loved is the Salzkammergut. If you can make it to Hallstatt and Bad Ischl, those are beautiful places too.
Austria is just beautiful. You can't miss whatever you do. You will also see the subtle changes in culture and language as you travel around.
Hope you have a nice trip!

Both countries are beautiful. I agree Trip Advisor is helpful. Switzerland is pricey. I love Lucerne and nearby is Mount Pilatus and the views are spectacular. Zermatt is a quaint village with the Matterhorn nearby.

We have been to Europe on several occasions and have enjoyed The Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It has been a bit of time since we've been and our trip books are in storage 1500 miles away, but I can make the following recommendation.
Berchtesgaden ("gateway to the mountains") in the southeastern part of Germany, quite close to Austria, is absolutely beautiful. While there, we stayed at Haus Geiger, a beautiful centuries old family owned hotel, where we were treated so very well.
From here, we took the southern root just down the road into Austria and then more northerly to Salzburg. On the way, we stopped at Hellbrunn Palace, once the palace of the Archbishop of Salzberg. This place is a must to see, as the Archbishop was very fond of "water toys." Watch out! You might get squirted!
In the same vicinity, we visited the salt mines, (which are not in Salzberg proper). These were originally dug by the Celts, then took over by the Romans who improved them. When you enter the mines, you put on a white jumpsuit which protects your clothing from the salt. Then you're given a gunny sack. I wondered about this, until we came to a number of long linden slides: this is how the miners got from one level to the next. There are beautiful crystaline structures to see and unbelievably clear underground lakes, along with friendly lectures on the history of the mines and the area.
Salzburg itself was wonderful. Many churches with wonderful architecture and, when we were there, two were being excavated and we were able to view roman mosaic floors. Do take in the catacombs, where early Christians had to hide to worship. And take the tram up to the fortified castle. There is much music offered in the city. Look for daily postings of Mozart and other Classical composer programs.
We did make it down into Innsbruk, only to stay half a day for two reasons: it was fogged in really bad, so we couldn't see a thing; and, the city was actually dirty, which was unlike any European city we had been in. There are many Italians who live in Innsbruk, so if you speak Italian, you'll do well there.
I can second the comment on prices in Switzerland: outlandish. The first night we were in Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland. We went to a restaurant and ordered 1 medium pizza and 3 garden salads, as there were 3 of us. The tally was $78.00 and that was in 1992. I can't imagine what it is now, with the dollar doing so poorly.
Please do make your reservations NOW, expecially in Switzerland, as that country is a "convention country," plus has many international political meetings going on, we were told. We ended up staying in places that we normally wouldn't and in one instance, had to share a large room with 3 Italian guys. That was not my idea of fun. And we made our reservations months in advance. I'd stay out of large cities and head into smaller towns.
Good luck and have a great time!

I did a Christmas Market tour in December and we were in Austria and Switzerland. Last summer my husband had a conference in Switzerland so I tagged along and we extended the visit. Switzerland is breathtakingly beautiful.
In addition to suggestions already discussed, I'd add a ride on the Bernina Express.
Also very near Salzburg in the Eagle's Nest
