Re: Hotel add on charges: my rant

I'm not sure where you are staying but I've booked a lot of travel (and yes, at Marriott's also) and never seen the extra charges as high as what you are saying here. And it is easy enough to find out the extra costs - just ask ahead of time for what the total stay per night, including taxes, etc. is.

This is what I do. I also book the room through the hotel directly.

Re: Hotel add on charges: my rant

My husband and I have been members of the Marriott Rewards programs for years .  wE own 2 Marriott timeshares and try to stay at Marriott whenever we can.  I absolutely agree that you cannot blame the hotels for the local taxes that they are required to collect by the jurisdiction they are located in.  Those are just pass through back to,the jurisdiction that imposes them.  Since my husband has been at UVA Medical in Charlottesville for his chemo treatments I have been staying at the Courtyard near the medical center and the staff there have been so nice to me.  I get a special rate because I have a patient in the hospital.  I have been able to get a room there even when the reservation staff at the 800 number says the hotel is sold out.  I then call the hotel, directly and they have always found a room for me.  A couple f times My husband has been able to leave the hospital a day earlier then I expected  and even though I was booked at the hotel for that night I have gone over to the hotel to get my luggage and checked out and never have they charged me a cancellation charge even though I was supposed to cancel by 6 pm the previous night.

Las Vegas has huge plans to become a medical destination and there are already extraordinary medical clinics here (according to the Mayor of Las Vegas).  She feels becoming a medical destination will fill up the hotels 365 days out of the year.  Not with outrageous fees......

Honestly, that is one of the best ideas I have heard.  Very resourceful when there are so many hotels.  I hope they succeed with this plan.

Re: Hotel add on charges: my rant

I will be in Vegas over Thanksgiving holiday.  Our room is "comped" for five days but we still have to pay the resort fee of $32.48 per night.  That fee includes access to the fitness center, internet access, and parking.  There's no way to avoid those fees unless you stay at some out of the way independent place.

We stay at Marriott exclusively.  We've never had a problem with "surprise" charges ever.

I always book directly.  They're very accomodating.

Re: Hotel add on charges: my rant

We stay at Hilton during football season, they have surprise charges too.. My husband questioned it and we were told it was for "incidentals" but we'd be credited back the money & we were.. It was like $30.00 hooked on to each bill.

Dh and I recently traveled and this year I booked directly with Double Tree by Hilton.  Last year we went to the same destination but stayed in a different hotel.  Both years I searched for hotels to get the best deal.

There were no surprise charges anywhere but you do have to read the fine print.  Only one hotel had a resort fee and you had to read the tiny print to figure that out.

If the hotel website didn't advertise that WiFi was free, I assumed there was a charge.  The taxes are a lot but you know up front you have to pay them.  We had to pay for parking at the hotel to the tune of $30.00 a night but again, that was on the homepage of the hotel website.

We had no other hidden costs at all.  We tipped housekeeping on our own, there was no fee for that.  We didn't have a minibar.  If we wanted something, there was a bar in our hotel and we could get something from there.

One thing about any Hilton hotels, it pays to join their Hilton Honors program.  You don't pay a dime for it and it gets you free upgraded WiFi.  When we checked out, we had a bill for 3 nights of parking plus taxes and a charge for the restaurant.  They ran my card through for that exact amount.  However, prior to that, they had run our card through for a couple hundred dollars so both charges were on our account for 3 days until the on for a couple hundred dollars dropped off and we were only charged for what we actually incurred.  Just something to be aware of.

Re: Hotel add on charges: my rant

If one wants to atay at a high end hotel, in a high end suite, then one is going to have to pay high end prices for that privilege.

One is not going to get a big fancy suite, and pay Motel 6 prices.

If one thinks that they will, then they are stupid.

Also, it is optional to use a mini bar. One does not have to use it. Just because it is there, does not mean that you have to use it. That charge is totally and 100% in control of the person staying in the room.

Same with tipping. That too is totally 100% in control of the person staying at the hotel.

Complaining about tipping? Easy and simple solution. DON'T TIP! It really is as easy as that.

Tipping is a choice.

No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing one to tip or to use the mini bar.

It always pays to join the hotel's loyalty program.

We have a free night with Marriott as a birthday gift.  Smiley Happy
