So we had our dog at the groomer several weeks ago. The first night home, he was licking his front paw underneath, in the space behind all the toes. It was red and I thought maybe the groom got the clippers to close. It didn't alarm me much, but I called to see if they had any problem with him and they didn't. The dog seemed fine, wasn't limping or anything, so I just let it go. A couple of weeks ago I had him in for a nail trimming and he was really skittish, kind of fighting them, which was really out of character for him. Once they finished the first paw (that paw) he was fine. He's been licking off and on, but still running and playing normally and definitely not favoring it at all. Today I got a look at it and it's pretty red in there, which makes sense if he's licking it a lot and it's a closed, dark area. It makes me wonder if there really was more irritation from the clipping than I realized or if he got a splinter or something. Again, his walking and running haven't been affected. But is this redness what they call a hot spot, or is this something different? I don't know if I'm overreacting or not, but I do have a vet appointment for him in the morning just to rule out any kind of infection. Is there something I should be doing for him in the mean time? Thanks.

I would go to the vet. It sounds more like a splinter or a cut that could be infected.
