I was at Costco yesterday and a mom was bringing back a Halloween costume for some unknown reason.
Why aren't the mom's making the costumes for the kids? You don't have to sew, just get creative.
I thought an exercise such as spending time together bonding inspires the children and the mom.
I dress my dog (no kids) up all the time, he was a baseball player, bought a child's hat from dollar store, t-shirt and ironed on his name, hat a bat, ball and mitt, made a dugout sign and took his picture for last year's Halloween.
Fun to do, and once he was a witch with one of my capes, made him a hat and just had fun, he won a contest that year that i entered him in. Last Christmas he was Santa, with red and white fabric, black belt and a Santa hat....that was too cute.

Because some people don't have a creative bone in their body.

I would imagine some children want a specific character ir enjoy the selection process.
I do sew and always made our 2 boy's costumes. When our older son was two, he was a red satin devil!

Many reasons why someone would not make a costume. Maybe they work, they aren't creative, can't sew (i can barely sew on a button) no time, kid want a special character, easier to buy one already made. I'm sure there are more.

@Mistreatedbycs Some children only want certain character costumes. I do believe, though, that children can be very creative if given the opportunity. There are so many DIY costumes that require very little and would give the children and their parents a great bonding activity. I dislike the word bonding, but it seems to be the only one that fits. I equate some of this to the parents who I see walking at the park with their kids and the parents are on the phone. The mothers are worse than the fathers. There are all kinds of signs in the park that have activities for the kids, but I think we need a sign telling parents to get off of their phones. I know that I am off topic now, but with the internet, there is every kind of costume/activity that literally costs next to nothing.

Growing up, I rarely saw a costume from a store. We had a lot to do with making our own.
Some mom's sewed, or let us "alter" some old shirt or bedsheet with a pair of scissors. We borrowed dad's belt or a tie, made & decorated paper hats, cardboard sabers and magic wands...
And we admired each others handiwork and posed for pictures before going out to trick 'r treat.
I loved the candy, but dreaming up and manufacturing those costumes was half the fun!
They say timing is everything.
I have a tremendous appreciation for the benefits provided by the timing of my birth and childhood.

Here's one for Gary and Carolyn. It's adult-sized so is probably inappropriate for children.

You can't possibly be serious. My mom and my Nana made our costumes, they started in the summer. My Nana was a great seamstress but that was 50 years ago and neither one ever held a paying job after they got married. They were homemakers, housewives and with my mom's kids being in school all day, they had time. Time that working moms simply do not have. I didn't make costumes for my girls, I didn't have the time but I also
Didn't have the desire. I think many sahm moms aren't interested making costumes and many kids want to buy their costumes. My girls liked shopping for their costumes. It was a tradition, we'd but their costumes in early October and visit the plant nursery for our pumping and have dinner at the pancake house. Yeah, bonding. We did that until they were in high school when they made their own costumes with their friends. I'm happy for your dog but don't equate pets with kids! There are many ways to have fun and bond with our kids but making costumes probably doesn't even make the list.

I had a working mom who did not sew , so we either bought a costume or paid someone to make it . One Halloween I was invited to a middle school party and my not so creative mom devised a Cleopatra outfit out of some old drapes ( no real sewing required ). With some great make-up and hair styling, I won the costume prize. You never know when creativity will strike ! LOL. 🎃

@Mistreatedbycs Could be one of several reasons:
the costume didn't fit
the child wanted something else
they got a better one elsewhere
neither the mom or dad is creative
regretted spending the money
decided against going trick or treating
schools no longer let the kids dress up
At least they didn't try to return it on November 1st!
