Just like @alicedee and @meallen616, I really like the idea of a patron saint medal - but what'd be more personal if there's a saint that bears the same name as the girl.
You can find some really pretty sterling silver medals on eBay.
Both my granddaughters will be making their First Communion, and I was also toying with the idea of getting them each a little St. Philomena medal.
She was only 13 or 14 when she was martyred, and is the patron saint of 'youth'.

Usually the Communion package includes a Rosary, prayer book and medal. Close family members and Godparents often give religious items.
If it is a friend's child, I'd put $20 in a card.

as you said, money is always good.
i remember i got a small prayer book, rosary when i made my 1st communion. this is going back almost 60+ yrs..
cross, bible, small cross would also be nice.

@maisiebrook A very blessed time but I guarantee she will receive religious articles. There are only so many rosaries a person can use.
A poster mentioned some earrings early in the thread; a little freshwater pearl bracelet with an initial charm would be nice-you could add a little cross to it if you feel a religious theme would be needed.
I would recommend something like that; but I wouldn't recommend anymore rosaries or statues only because she will receive those anyway.

@BeccaLou wrote:@CelticCrafterNot everyone has tons of family. And I don't believe there are rules of what you are aloud to purchase. Be your own guide. I haven't a etiquitte about religious sacrements.
Never said there were rules about gifting for religious sacrements...
How many crosses, crufixes, rosary beads, bibles and picture frames does a 7 or 8 year old girl need?
Buy what you want and quite possibly it will sit in a drawer for eternity...

I have been to two holy communions, we bought a savings bond for the first one and then it became difficult to get them so we gave the girl a check

Check the EWTN religious catalog. (ewtnrc dot com) .... they have a digital religious catalog online and there are several pages with ideas for First Communion gifts.
Look for link to digital catalog and flip through the first couple of pages.

Unless the child is a niece or your Godchild, I would not buy a religious gift.
I agree with the money suggestions.

I got my niece a very small and delicate pair of diamond earrings (that I had the jeweler put screw on backs), a white gold cross (silver is great too), a nice jewelry box and I took her out for dinner where ever she wanted to go and that was Dave and Busters. I could have just got her the Dave and Busters and she would have been thrilled.
