I prefer my pajamas. Needless to say, we are not party people. We did recently go to a dinner party in which I was the stranger (two couples who are my husband's pals).

I forgo the glitz for black trousers and a cashmere leopard sweater. That's as dressy as I get.

Haven't been to one in several yrs....until this past weekend.  My Husband's company is doing so well they brought back the big over the top massive holiday party from many yrs ago.  Things had gotten so bad that they cut the lavish party for employees for yrs but with the economy doing so good it's back! LOL

People were decked out....I saw a few ladies in sequins/sparkle jump suits....or pants and skirts!  Reminded me of the 70's!

I did wear a nice glittery jacket with black pants....way too cold for a skirt for me.

But everyone was in something that was very dressy....there must have been over 1000 people.  Live band....open bar with really good drink options not the low ball stuff like at a wedding.  It was alot of fun....I enjoyed putting on something that made me feel pretty...I needed to go out somewhere so for me it was great.  The food was wonderful too.

Years ago we would go to 2 very formal Holiday parties given by clients of DH.One would be in a ballroom in a fancy hotel in NYC.The other would be in a Country Club on Long Island. We would get dressed to the nines.Once in a while we would even be picked up in a limo, compliments of the host.

These days the parties are a lot more casual. We attended one in a nightclub last weekend.

Three this week, all casual. I don’t do dressy.

One invite said something about wearing an ugly sweater. I don’t have an ugly sweater. Why would I?

Anyway...looking forward to fun!

Thanks for all your replies! So interesting! I guess we've all been there done that or never wanted to. You ladies are all so interesting and funny. I went out for an impromptu dinner with my partner tonight and at the last minute we switched from a more casual place to a more dressy place, which I wasn't really dressed for. They were all decked out for the holidays and it was very festive and made me feel happy. Even without a holiday outfit I had a great night out in the spirit of the holidays with twinkling lights and holly, etc.. Wish I had a black sequined dress for tonight LOL just kidding. Many happy holiday wishes to you all xox. Thanks for sharing.

I have some velvet tops and some sweaters with a bit of sparkle for holiday time. I wear them with jeans or leggings. They are a bit more festive than my usual, but they work well at parties and nice dinners out.

When I was a working person I used to plan my outfits for the entire month of December.  Christmas colors, sweaters, velvets, pins, etc...There'd be a few parties - I was always big on velvet - esp. jackets - which I've held on to.  I can't part with them as they are so lovely, and I keep thinking I may get to wear them again, but alas, my retired life has really turned me into a homebody.  Cat Sad

Dh and I attended his Christmas party.  It was in a hall but there was no stated dress code.  It was interesting to look around and see all the various manners of dress from people who came in t-shirt, jeans, their work boots and baseball hats turned around to a few women who were in long sequin gowns, sequin skirts, jackets, etc.  Some of the attendees were in "ugly" holiday sweaters and jackets, some in very pretty holiday sweaters or tops.

We go to a few holiday parties every year but they are not glitzy events.  Casual dressy seems to be the way most people roll these days.  I think the only time I really get dressed up is for a wedding, and even then I'm more of a "little black dress" person than a glitz person.

I'm self employed and work primarily from home, so I guess that I could dress myself and my cats in glittery attire - LOL!!!

In all seriousness, our family/friend holiday celebrations are extremely low key and casual.  Comfortable clothes!!!

When I had a corporate career, I endured the office parties in hotel ballrooms and restaurants.  In a way, I sort of miss having a good excuse to buy a fancy outfit.  Usually something in velvet. No spangles or sparkles (not my thing).  However, I can't imagine now having to deal with wearing high heels, rustling up a date or going it alone, small talk with drunk coworkers.  Ugh Smiley Sad

Nowadays, I'd much socialize with those nearest and dearest on the holiday (human and furry).
