Hole in New Sweater asking for Advice

I bought a sweater from an online company, Blair to be exact. I opened it  up, put it on and did  not notice the hole just below my waist until I took it off. It was oversized and kind of folded on my body.  I could not believe my eyes... a hole in new sweater as if the stitches did not hold up or something just ate them away.

My question, can the sweater be replaired by someone who knits?  I could approach a causual friend but I don't want to put her on the spot and she lives almost 2 hours away.  The hole is front and center so if I try the result might be not what I want.

Any advice?  Just so you know I am allowed to return it.

@bonnielu Try your local dry cleaners who usually have a tailor, not cheap, however.

@bonnielu  I would return it. Too much of a hassel and it might still not turn out right. Good luck Smiley Happy

The sweater was about $15 total.  But it really was pretty.  And it looked pretty good on me and was comfortable.  But finally looking down and stretching it out, letting it fall naturally, what a surprise.  I did nothing to harm it or tug on it. If you go on Blairs website it is featured when you log on.  I guess back it goes.

No, it would not be easy to re-knit and repair a hole. You have to have matching yarn, and all the stitches around the hole may be loose and open.  Maybe it could be stitched closed but the sweater might look misshapen.   I would return it and say it was received damaged.

@bonnielu    How big is the hole?  How are you going to find yarn to exactly match the color/texture?  I'd send it back.

Re: Hole in New Sweater asking for Advice

I knew a person who was a reweaver. She worked in a place where that's all they did. Garments with holes or tears would be repaired. The cost of those kinds of reweaving repairs is high and usually the garments are one-of-a-kind, vintage some other expensive piece. So if you still want your sweater fixed then do a search for fabric reweaving in your area.

A no brainer for me. I'd return it and get a replacement if still available!  If not  able to do an exchange I'd accept a refund

Re: Hole in New Sweater asking for Advice

I'd need to see a picture to be sure but I'm fairly confident the hole in the sweater could be repaired satisfactorily. You don't need to reweave it or anything complicated. If you love the sweater I would take it to the dry cleaners, as suggested, and see if they can do an easy repair. After all it only cost $15 and you like the sweater so not much at risk.
I received a sweater from logo a while back and just recently decided to wear it. Lo and behold...I found a hole. I was able to use a needle and thread to gently pull the yarn fibers together and do a decent mend. If anyone is looking at your mend job close enough to inspect your work, well...they're too close!
