Re: ❓Hoaxes🚫 & Scams on Facebook etc.❓

I wish everyone understood what you are saying.  It certainly is true.

I am recently divorced and my ex went to FB and sent friend requests to all MY friends, not his family, my friends.  Everyone of them befriended him because they recognized the name, even though they knew we were apart.

I just don't post anymore.  If a friend's page is "public" and you post on it, the whole world can see it!  You never know what your friend's settings are!

Scaremongers and the anti-FB brigade aside, it is what you make it. As others have said, common sense and a bit of knowledge and help from those you trust goes a long way. Go through your privacy settings with a friend or family member who knows what they're doing, to "lock down" your info to your preferences.

Don't just click on anything and everything, especially quizzes that want your info. Back out of those quick.

Be as cautious on FB as you are on a PC with requests of all types from apps, people, groups, etc. If you didn't solicit something, pass on it and don't bite. Better to miss out on something you don't really NEED anyway than give too much away.

I don't live in fear on FB by any means, nor do I consider myself dumb, gullible, uninformed or vulnerable to any aspect of the internet, because I keep myself informed without going crazy over every possible maybe/might be/could possibly be rumor that's out there.

Many of my friends got a smart phone and a younger friend put them on Facebook and they do not have knowledge of how it works.  Probably don't know there are "settings."  If the person who put them on did not take the time to do it.

I set a page up for my adult niece and it is totally private. She trusted me to do it right.

Re: ❓Hoaxes🚫 & Scams on Facebook etc.❓

Here's the big ones - Suggested Posts are almost always hoaxes.  They have the same old posts with different people, slightly different words.  How many heavy women whose husband/BF/SO is either in the military or overseas and hasn't seen them in a long time OR they were dumped bc they were too fat but they got revenge and now smoking hot!  These are almost always for the supplement garcinia cambogia which has been shown to not work.  I also believe this is one of the things that Dr. Oz, as a physician, got slammed by other doctors for promoting this on his show as one of the  new "miracle" drugs.

Any of the ones showing celebrities - Melissa McCarthy having lost so much weight, Diane Keaton whose face is smooth bc she uses some "secret" wrinkle cure, and before I came here - I noticed there's a Kathy Gifford one about her running off stage in tears because . . .

Old saying - IF IT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE - IT IS!    Every women would be wrinkle free and forever thin if this stuff was true and someone would be making a fortune from it.  As it is, they are making a fortune bc of the naive people who are looking for that easy way out!

People on FB just don't seem to listen when you tell them it is a scam or not true. I post the link to that particular item they are posting about, from Snopes and many ignore it.

I always check to make sure something is true before reposting.

Snopes is great resource.
