Hi shoekitty!
I have watch these hoarder shows and the one consistent factor in all of the hoarders is emotional pain from the past they hadn't dealt with. So instead of facing the pain and problems, many hoarders swallow the pain and suffering by collecting items to surround themeselves with things that give them immediate gratification when no one else is around. It is a form of depression in an unusal way, but still the pain is buried and they can't seem to deal with it. And, yes along with the depression is the anger issue too.
