How did black mold get on the dolls? Where was she storing them?

Even though she lived in a NYC apartment w/o wallboard or wood, a slight leak from the upstairs unit into her closet which went unnoticed for years (because of the hoard) mushroomed into black mold. Once created, it can spread from point of origin pretty swiftly. The closet was in the entry foyer, the Barbies were stacked on the opposite wall about 6' away, the floor became covered with "things". Black mold overtook the entire area. Took weeks to remediate.

Yikes, did she finally throw the dolls out?

She was forced to, but she held back quite a few and put them in storage. She will find when she checks the storage unit, that the mold might have overtaken other things nearby but she could not be reasoned with

I have noticed that dolls "skin" gets gummy over time. My daughter had a few from her childhood she wanted to keep. I put them in a small rubbermaid container and put them away. When I opened it, they had white spots all over them and felt gummy. In the garbage they went.

I feel so sad for the children that have to grow up in the filth,never to have a clean bed,healthy food,never have friend as over.What about their mental health?
