Hip replacement surgery - anyone have experience?

My 67 y/o friend had both hips replaced within the past few years. I spoke with him recently, and he says that he can play golf and walk on the course fine, but has pain when walking on hard surfaces. I'm wondering if this is normal. Anyone have experience or ideas about this? Thanks in advance.
