There are GPS trackers which work off of satellite and they have an SOS emergency button. Some have fees and some don't. I usually hiked with a group of other hikers and some of them carried tracking devices. I don't own one but I never hiked alone or without someone who had a tracker.

 

Before the days of GPS we were on our own and prayed nothing bad would happen.
