Thank you, everyone, for the feedback. Our nephew is really a very sweet and thoughtful young man but he's still a teenage boy so he may not think about things like a thank you note. I'm sure his mother will remind him, though. She's going all out for a graduation party (this is her oldest son so he's the first to graduate) and I know my husband feels a little guilty we can't be there in person. We will get to watch the ceremony online, though, so that's cool...at least we'll get to see some part of it.

I too agree with a visa for the $50.00.  Many of these students need new electronics like tablets for college.

@NYC2AZ I think that the money will be a welcome gift. And your nephew will have no trouble spending it.

BUT as a Target gift card, I just know from my son. My son has not been in a Target store since grade school, when he went shopping with me. My son has a collection of gift cards to stores where he will never shop. 

He gets these cards from people at work and relatives for his birthday or Christmas. He has cards for hundreds of dollars to WaWa, ShopRite,even $50 to Amazon and about 10 other retailers. I feel bad the people meant well. But he will never use these cards.

Cash is best...or a check.  Many graduates are saving spending money for their first year of college.

$200 is very generous.  He should be thrilled.  Kids do not want memento gifts.  Times have changed.

@NYC2AZ  I like your original idea. Obviously you and your husband feel very supportive and that's wonderful. The larger gfit can go toward an expense and the giftcard for something he might just want for himself. Target is fine, as would be Amazon. Most everyone can find something they want at either choice.

unless there is something you KNOW he loves and needs, i think cash or a check or a gift card (or any combination of these) is the perfect gift. everyone can always use cash, whether they spend it or save it.

@NYC2AZ Kids must be taught to give thanks for gifts. I actually have an album full of little thank you and other notes give and sent to me by my grands over the years! My son and DIL taught them well
