Honestly, I believe we are going to have another crash soon. The costs of things like homes will come down but unemployment will be way up again. And look out , if you have money in the stock market.

I think you should be watching the markets.

Unemployment and community specific unemployment is at the lowest % in  at least 15 years.

Consumer confidence as a result is very high; markets are reviving for specifics (think foundries).

@blackhole99 So you never buy anything that other's can't afford?

I don't buy anything that I don't think is a fair price either. On the other hand there are some things that are a fair price to someone but they are out of my price range.

This professor is arguing that people shouldn't buy expensive and I assume luxury items. Then the prices will go down so others can buy them. Except that forgets about the part where if no one buys they just go out of business.

Economic policies based on someone's jealousy of others will never work. I want a Porsche so no one else should have one until they make them affordable for me?

This professor sounds more like he's in the Social Sciences and not in Economics.

Re: High prices....

[ Edited ]

That's not what I thought the professor was saying. I have bought items that were the best I could afford, but if the market charges in excess for that item, then it excludes me. I think people in general could get along with a lot less, but they do or buy just because they can. I have a feeling people who have always had what they needed cannot empathize with those who have to struggle for everything.

The unemployment rate is low due to a person "who stopped looking for a job" is no longer "counted" ... also the GDP configuration has changed, giving Americans false sense of how bad off our country really is .... this computation change was done three years ago.

As far purchasing a M.S. ham, I will not be contributing to her home in the Hamptons.  I only buy LTS from QVC since prices have risen exponentially.   I hope the acquisition of Zulily and HSN under Qurate is not the culprit for the $$$ increases.  I have to save my money for my retirement, sadly.

Ha! I do know that but my brain was thinking about politcal science and socialism at the same time. Often what I'm thinking doesn't get typed out correctly. You wont be shocked to know that I wasn't an English Major! I have a tough time condesing all of my thoughts into something concise. Thanks for the catch! Smiley Happy

I never had an economics prof that would have taught this theory as a good thing so it's pretty crazy to me.

So reading the Martha Stewart thread about the crazy expensive ham made me think about my professor of economic's theory that we have a moral duty to fight high pricing of merchandise.  He believes that if we all accept over the top prices for merchandise, even if we can afford it, then we send a message to the retail community that it's okay to overcharge the public for whatever they are selling thus keeping the poor from ever being able to buy some quilty things.  I have a sinus cold right now and I'm not wording it right I'm sure but what do you think - agree, disagree?

@Northray  I think your economics professor is entitled to his belief but I resent his implication that everyone has a "moral duty" to fight high pricing.

Also-expensive doesn't equate to quality all the time.

He is promoting a social agenda.

I don't know what your source of information is but it is definitely not ABC or NBC news - the market has been swinging up & down for weeks. Unemployment rates are low because people fell off the charts over time. Why don't you go to the local foodbank and watch the poor line up for the meager food they are given. And they beg - BEG - for things like toilet paper and tampons or pads they desparately need but have no money to buy.

It's a "luxury ham"!!!  You don't have to buy that ham ... lots of other lower cost hams on the market.

There is merchandise priced across the board.  You buy what you can afford or what you wish to buy and let others do the same.

I'm suspicious about your professor's political leanings.
