I still have my yearbooks and my class ring '80. I pulled all the high school yearbooks out about a month ago.

I have a year book from 9th-12th grade plus my class ring, which I have never worn. The first day I got it, my boyfriend, now husband wanted it for a pinky ring, so I let him have it. When he gained weight and retuned it. My ring is small...size 4. It has never been worn after that not even by me.
I often refer to my year books to look somone up..after reading an obit or news article.
My husband still has all four years of his year books and class ring. He also refers to his year book on occasion to look somone up.
My daughter does the same. She has books and a ring.
My sons never wanted year books or class rings, so they don't have any.
My two college age granddaughters have a senior HS year book, but they did not want class rings. They said they might get a college ring instead....not sure yet.
I don't think these things are a big deal any more. Rings are especially expensive now.
I know you can order class rings through a jewelry store or online customized and not have to purchase them through the school. My daughter did that. Her class ring is a small dainty ring. She is a petite 4'11" and did not want a honking heavy weight traditional ring. Prices vary. Some are stainless steel or SS and more affordable.

Many years ago our newly built house was burglarized, and the class rings were part of all of my jewelry that were robbed. Prior to the new house, we lived in a small apartment which was located in an older house. The yearbooks, along with some pictures and other things, were stored in a cardboard box in a closet on a top shelf. The roof on the old house apparently needed replacing, and the rain from the roof got into the closet and dripped into the box and everything else in the closet. The yearbooks and everything in the closet were ruined and thrown out.

I still have all of my yearbooks 9-12, but was never interested in the class ring. They weren't free, but I don't remember how much they were...nice books...all hardback.
The ring wasn't my style, as I thought they were non feminine and too clunky so I never would have worn it.

The younger generation in our family is split on these topics.
It does feel as if Gen Z may value experiences such as trips or concerts/shows over mementoes and collecting "treasured" things.

DH has his senior yearbook only. His class was small and still get together a few times a year and we are still friends with some of the local ones. Yesterday we had a brunch at the home of one of his school friends along with 2 others we meet with frequently He refers to his yearbook a oouple times a year when someone's name comes up to show me who they were, etc. He did not get a class ring. This would never be done now, but back then the class voted for the Most Popular and DH was it. He keeps close ties with as many of his class as he can still. I think there were only about 70 kids in his senior class and most of them were classmates from first grade on thru high school.
I have all of my high school yearbooks and one college yearbook. I bought my high school ring and could hardly wait to receive it and wore it all the time for a few years. Don't know where it is now It was 14K with initials and year on the side and emblem in the middle of the rectangular red stone.
At that time we girls wore our boyfriend's ring as a necklace on a chain. We got our high school rings in our Junior year.
I never look at any yearbook except rarely my Senior Year one but I do have senior pictures of a good many of my class of about 200.
My only brother died a couple years ago and his stepson sent me some of his highscool awards and football programs, etc along with his Senior Yearbook. I had said he didn''t need to package up and mail all of the yearbooks from other years. In going thru his yearbook and seeing what his classmates wrote about him.brought back many memories and felt good to read about him from the view of his classmates and friends. Don't know if kids still write messages in each other's yearbooks now, but back then we did.

All of my yearbooks are here beside my chair; I look at them often, as I have been recording death dates in them for my classmates, as well as others from our small school.
My class ring cost $39.95; haven't worn it since 1974, but am not ready to sell it. I also bought 2 necklaces that seemed so important at the time, but are useless now. I do not see the importance in the jewelry now.
My daughters have yearbooks and class rings; both graduated over 20 years ago, do not wear the rings, and probably have no idea where the yearbooks are.

I got a class ring (silver) and four years of high school yearbooks too.
The Balfour Company is still in business today but, judging by these comments, they must be having a hard time.

I know the rings are ridiculously expensive and it's my understanding that most students don't order rings. One friend's daughter and another's granddaughter graduated HS this year. Neither wanted a class ring due to the expense. I don't know about yearbooks but I suspect young people have no use for them. My girls are in their 30s, I'm pretty that after senior week, they never looked at those yearbooks and don't now they don't know where they are.
