Hey, California girls! Your guidance please

I am planning a trip in 2012 to land in LA, pick up a friend in Santa Clarita, go to Hearst Castle, then head over and up to Yosemite for a few days and back down through Sequoyah National Park. When exactly, are the poppies in bloom? Also, are there any great places to see along the way. Great restaurants, scenic routes? I always appreciate input from the locals. Thanks. Gigi
