'Heroes' Are Not Always Who You'd Expect

[ Edited ]

A father has praised a local homeless man for protecting his daughter and her three friends during the mass shooting in Sacramento on April 3.

Tom Orosco's journey to pick up his daughter and friends became a parent's nightmare. He described to local news outlet Good Day Sacramento how he heard gunshots as he spoke to his daughter on the phone — then the line went silent.

Searching the terrifying scene, he couldn't find his daughter, but not because they were in danger; they were being sheltered in a doorway by a man identified as Tim Langer by CBS Sacramento.

Langer, who is homeless, was asleep when the gunshots started. He told the site and came to see what he described as a "state of war" that left six people, whose ages ranged from 21 to 57,  dead.

He then saw Ororsco's daughter, who had fallen, and he went to help her up. He then huddled her and her friends in the doorway where he slept and used his body to shield them as the bullet flew.

Police said more than 100 expended shell casings were found at the scene.

Orosco went back a few days later to thank Langer for saving his daughter and now plans to give him a phone, food, and other supplies to get him back on his feet.

"It's a reminder that there are good people out here, and he's one of those good people," Orosco told Good Day Sacramento.

Sacramento citizens are now banding together to raise support for Langer, local news reports.

The Sacramento Police Department has arrested two brothers in connection with the shooting.

@KingstonsMom This story brought tears. Reminds me of the bible story which teaches that sometimes we meet strangers who are actually angels. Not exactly angels in the religious sense (tho I believe it's possible through an experience years ago) but in a more earthly sense. I don't know if I'm explaining this right.

It is always uplifting to hear about acts of kindness no matter where they come from or who is involved.  From this horrible tragedy rose a hero, someone down on his luck, homeless and living on the streets.  He is still a person with feelings and he proved that by protecting the daughter and friends while bullets were flying.

I salute Mr. Langer for his bravery and compassion, for saving lives.  Despite his situation he came through for others in need.  I wish him the best and perhaps with help from the family of the young lady he protected, he will find the life he deserves and thrive.

Thanks for sharing this touching story.

😭 Heartwarming story. That kind of unselfish kindness without thinking does bring tears. Thanks for posting this! @KingstonsMom.

Whatever good and kind stories are out there, we can always need to hear them.

@KingstonsMom

Thank you for posting this story and the Good News Sacramento News Outlet  for it's great journalism for discovering and doing this story.

It's too bad more news outlets don't spend more time covering stories like this instead of just the bad things going on in our country, and localities.

There are a lot more good people that do good things, than the opposite of what is mostly portrayed on most local and national newscasts. I think bad stories are easier to find, thus less work for those that like to be called, journalists.

As they say in the news business: "Blood Sells".

So true! These stories are what we need as a society, instead of the media's constant 'gloom and doom' happening in our society.

No wonder so many people are on anti-depressants, committing suicide, etc.

Give us hope, we all need hope.....

Wonderful hero!

I'm hoping that someone in the country/world will set up some sort of fund account for him; or maybe even better, a safe and clean place for him to live.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

@ROMARY

My thoughts exactly, I hope people more prolific than me on social media platforms, could help his story go viral, for more support!

Yes, a clean, safe place to live, and maybe a local business or corporation will offer him a job or career that he's always wanted.

It would warm many hearts.  Heart to see this man find a good path that is meant for him to follow.
