Re: Help finding a new dog food.

Thanks, everyone. Smiley Happy I bought a small bag of the Natures Recipe to try out. I see by the voting that it is still considered "mid-range", but I'm going to see if he likes it. If not, I'll keep looking. Sooooo many options @PS. It was a bit overwhelming.:-0

Re: Help finding a new dog food.

We buy Taste of the Wild by mail, about $45 but a huge bag, feeds our 3 dogs for a month. no cornmeal or,other junk...meat, vitamins, fish oil. You get what you pay for.

On 8/4/2014 kachina624 said: When I looked for a dog food I check the site that evaluate various brands and selected Merrick, made in Amarillo, Texas. I then called them and questioned them about the use of imported components. I learned that the only things they use are some venison and lamb from New Zealand and Australia. Their export requirements are more stringent than our import requirements. My dogs like the variety that contains apples. They've done very well on it and have gorgeous coats. I get it delivered from Amazon Prime but it's also available at Petco.

I also feed Merrick with a couple tablespoons of homemade. Merrick is very highly rated on dogfoodadvisor, higher than Blue Buffalo if I remember correctly.

There is another highly rated food: Honest Kitchen, made in San Diego, CA. It's human grade ingredients, dehydrated. You can eat it yourself (but you wouldn't want to!). Mix with water to feed. I tried it for a while, but we're back to the Merrick. I might get some of the Honest Kitchen just to switch it out occasionally. It's different.

Here's a NYT article about Honest Kitchen in case anyone is interested.

So glad she's doing better! I'm so glad they have grain free foods now, who knew??

Re: Help finding a new dog food.

You can always order Natural Balance from PetCo or PetSmart, or even Amazon. Also your local pet store should be able to order it for you. Our's certainly will.

check out the dog food advisor for ratings and reviews.

Re: Help finding a new dog food.

There are some good brands suggested here. Just make sure the brand is MADE is the USA. Some companies are here, but they have their products made in China....I WILL NOT buy any food from that country!!

Over the past few years, I've tried brand after brand, & had A LOT of recalls (China manufacturing plants). I only buy what I believe to be quality foods, but that isn't always the case.

Natural Balance was one of the brands that was recalled at one point. Once that happens, I will never try that brand again.

I've had my dog on Newman's Own dry dog food, but he isn't crazy about it. I'm going to try Blue Buffalo next (USA!!)
