My homeowners ins, which is pretty standard, covered all of my personal belongings which were damaged in the lightening strike. My ins company sent me a check to cover the losses and/or repairs for my belongings .It was a substantial check and the amount covered the losses and some.

Looks like I've been stepped on by them too.  So glad you guys got this.  I've fought with landlords, building inspectors, bosses, different kinds of insurance companies and the list goes on.  Maybe it depends on the area? However, we had an issue with the chimney and the insurance company did pay for lightning strike damamge to the house.  Not all of it though.  Depends on the kind of policy one has so deductible was a factor.  I found that when I was single and a woman I experienced injustice because of this reason.  Now that I have a husband, I put him on the front lines and he GETS respect.  LOL!  lousy but true.  Again, glad to hear you guys got good treatment.

@patbz   I'd guess homeowner's insurance.  It's probably considered an Act of God.  I know it's locking the barn after the horse is stolen, but you might want to consider a good surge protector, and not one of those strips.

How are your TVs and other appliances?  I guess you had a good storm over in Show Low.  Partly cloudy but sunny here.

we had a surge protecter installed when we replaced our electrical panel last year.

Re: Help! We had a direct lightening strike

It was determined, by the electrician who inspected my house after the strike, that the bolt of lightening entered my house through the ground and then travelled throughout the entire house wiring and then exited through one outlet in my basement where the wall got blackened by that event. The electrician said the lightening never travelled through my breaker box so even if I had a whole-house surge protector connected to my breaker box that would not have prevented the damages I had experienced. The electrician said the entire thing was an unfortunate event and that it can happen anywhere regardless of the preventative measures taken.

@SilleeMee    Were you home when this happened and what did it look, feel, sound, smell like?

Re: Help! We had a direct lightening strike

@Kachina624

I was home when it happened. There was just an ordinary thunderstorm going on with the usual thunder and lightening. But then there was a really bight flash, don't know where exactly, and then almost immediately a very loud crack of thunder like it was very close to my house somewhere. I didn't smell anything like burning or that ozone smell you get right after you get static electricity. Nothing like that. I actually thought that a transformer in my neighborhood got struck and was the cause of my power failure. My neighbors all had power so it was just my house that got it. It took almost three weeks to get everything back to normal. I was w/o internet for weeks b/c my modem got fried and had to wait for another one to get delivered.

Re: Help! We had a direct lightening strike

Thank you @Kachina624 .

That lightening strike ranks in the top 5 of the worst things that ever happened to me in my lifetime. That's how bad it was for me. If it killed me then that would have made it to the top of the list....LOL!
