The below text is taken from a People website story, also saw this on USAToday earlier today -
A blizzard is headed for Hawaii, and meteorologists are stunned.
Portions of the Big Island of Hawaii are expected to see 12 inches or more of snow and winds up to 100 mph Friday evening through Sunday morning, according to a bulletin from the National Weather Service.
"Travel could be very difficult to impossible," the bulletin stated. "Blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility at times, with periods of zero visibility."
This unusual weather event, which will largely impact higher elevations, has surprised meteorologists across the country. This rare weather event is caused by what's called a "Kona Low," a low-pressure system that sits west of the islands and pulls in moisture from the south, per The Weather Channel. The remainder of the island is expecting heavy rain, which could possibly trigger flooding.

I sort of doubt they have many snow plows. I hope everyone in its path is safe and warm.

When I saw the title of this, I thought maybe Dairy Queen was opening new stores in Hawaii! Sounds like this will be an amazing event and new to everyone there...so best to hunker down and stay inside where it is safe until it is over. Fake news, perhaps?

The article I read this morning described this as an event that will happen high up in the upper mountain ranges, which makes more sense to me. While blizzard conditions there are unusual, apparently snow up there is common. Not something I ever thought about, but reasonable considering the altitude. Some news sources seem to be going for shock value. (Big surprise)

Thats just crazy. They can't open the ski resorts in the Southwest US because there has been no snow and Hawaii gets blizzard warnings? Something's wrong with this picture.

Are you, Toby and your Surfer hubby safe from this snow storm?
I sure hope so!

The mountains of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island do get snow in many years. And here on the island of Maui, we sometimes get snow on top of Haleakala too in winter.
This is a little early though.

Hawaii has mountains on the Big Island and the mountain areas do get snow. A lot of of it. They skii and snow board on the mountains. You can go skiing in the mountain, hop in your car and go surfing in the afternoon.
