I think what she said to the server was terrible, and I would be hurt as well. To not be there for his birthday is awful. I would give anything to be able to celebrate another birthday with my dad.
This all being said, when I see the post of how much the dad has done and does for her still,
I have to say he is partly to blame here. This is a married woman with children. Her and her husband need to pay their own bills, and he does not need to give her high priced items. Her husband should say something when she is disrespecting her father like that. Do the grandchildren and husband disrespect her dad as well?
Was she ever disciplined? This is not normally what adults start doing at 37.

Lenapecci - As the girl's mother passed on when she was 13, my friend feels she's been without the love of a mother when she was growing up. He played both roles but no one is perfect and she blames and condemns him for it. She is on her second marriage and has two children - no doubt she will let the grandchildren despise him as well but they are still too young He just wants them all to be a family. Her husband is around when she says and does things but leaves her alone - he would have to pay a price later. Both husband and she are teachers - 9th grade.

She tells the server that her dad is old because he orders old people food. My friend was slightly hurt at the remark. She orders the trendy vegetarian plate and behaves smugly. She then went on to say that food like that will be off menus and off of family tables as people don't do that sort of old school, old fashioned eating today.
I don't think having a traditional meal makes you old or old school. I like my traditional meals - (reduced in fat and some calories though). What do you think.
I think your friend's daughter is out of touch with reality and more importantly, why is she concerned with her father's meal selection??? Unless your friend has meal/dietary restrictions that she feels she needs to monitor, I see nothing wrong with him ordering a "traditional meal" anytime he chooses. Many people don't cook much for themselves, especially elderly men. Lots of foods that are considered "traditional" are comfort foods. Why should this man be made to feel foolish for ordering something he enjoys? I am not considered elderly, but I now live alone and it is difficult sometimes preparing meals for just one person. I have no desire to cook a 15 pound turkey and a pot of mashed potatoes for just me, but every once in awhile having turkey, gravy and all the sides sounds good, plus the joy of not having a whole sink of dirty pots and pans to clean. I think your friend should tell his daughter to mind her own business the next time they dine out together. She probably wouldn't appreciate rude comments regarding her choice of meals and her father shouldn't be subjected to it. In the big scheme of things there are much more important things to worry about.

I don't think that is a traditional meal - but comfort food. In the home I grew up with, traditional was Italian food! haha.
Comfort food are what each person makes of it and your friend was pretty crass to say that. I do not view that dinner "old people food" at all.
And no, it will never go out of style. People love their comfort food, whether it is a turkey dinner with all of the fixin', mac & cheese, meatloaf with mashed potatoes, beef stew, tuna casserole, and so on.
The Food Channel has chefs prepared updated versions of comfort food, so I think they would know a thing or two about a thing or two!

That kind of food is better than some of the food you get, or should I say barely get, at some expensive restaurants.

Biancardi and others - Yes, it is his business and I think he should enjoy the fruits of his labors and sacrifices. Ladybug, you are correct - it is better than a lot of food you are served at more pricey places.

She sounds like a real jerk.
Traditional and comfort food will never go out of style. As a matter of fact, I see a lot of trendy restaurants here going back to that.
I was watching Food Networks show celebrating the last 20 yrs as a tv station and they revealed the number 1 downloaded recipe of all time was Alton Browns Baked Macaroni and Cheese recipe.
If you look back 50 yrs and see what Americans were eating it was a lot of traditional meals like these and we didn't have the problem with obesity that we do now.

Very True. Gotta say, it's hard to beat a good Mac n Cheese casserole.

Your friend's daughter isn't as savvy as she thinks. Traditional, homestyle cooking is very much on trend.
One celebrity chef who is part of this trend, is Tyler Florence, and I had dinner at his San Francisco restaurant recently...Wayfare Tavern. It was fabulous, and the place is very popular and hard to get a reservation for....I won a contest, and that was how I got to dine there! Loved it!
