Please think about and respect your neighbors when living in apartments or shared living areas.  A friend of mine has a neighbor who lives directly above her who loves to feed birds.  This food attracts other animals in addition to birds.  Squirrels are a constant bother to my friend.  They have broken through her screens while climbing up the side of the building.  Mind you, she is on the third floor of the building and the squirrels climb up the brick to reach the upstairs neighbor.  They make holes in screens and she even had a squirrel in her condo.  This neighbor has been able to continue this behavior in spite of contact by condo board and lawyer letters, next will be legal action.  These rodents are dirty, can spread disease and dangerous if they get in your house.   The food that falls to the ground can also attract rats, mice, raccoons etc.  Don't do it unless you own your home and live away from direct neighbors.

My daughter used to feed the birds at her apartment complex. No longer. Management told her she could no longer have the feeder. It attracted squirrels, raccoons and undesirable birds- Pigeons . I don't think the downstairs neighbor cared for it either. Birdseed dropping down on their outdoor space.

Re: Having Bird Feeders

Maybe a hummingbird feeder would be easier to manage given where you live. I have a bird feeder and the sunflower hulls do kill the grass if not cleaned up,  so once every 1-2 weeks, I take my old Dustbuster out and vacuum up the discarded shells...they come right up since they are so light and then everything looks neat and clean. The grass still grows.  I have never had an issue with too much bird poo....occasionally will see some on a patio chair but it cleans up easily, but I don't have hundreds of birds. I suggest trying the hummingbird feeder . The problem with putting up a regular feeder is sthat if you are told to remove it, the birds will still be coming looking for food. Remember to also provide water if you put out a bird feeder. You could also scatter seed on the ground.

Yesterday and today there has been a bunch of birds on the tree out front, little birds maybe sparrows pecking on the

branches. Must be something there for

them!

I have decided to re-think a bird feeder

and will not be putting one outside!
