LOL, i can honestly say that i have never wondered what happened to that yacht! however, i thought that that blog was very interesting and thanks for sharing it. i wish the blogger had put some captions on the photos so that we knew who the people were (the ones that were not easily identifiable that is). love how the boat has been modernized.....i prefer that look to the way onassis had it styled.

I have always been fascinated by Onassis and his yacht and decided today to go in search of what became of it. I was so disappointed it fell into disrepair and pleased to hear it has now been refurbished. His grand daughter Athina was not really brought up to honor the Greek life, language and history and showed no interest in the yacht or Scorpios which she recently sold to a Russian. I was shocked by that since she has more then enough wealth to keep the Island. Onassis and Christina are buried there.

Perhaps Athina is trying to distance herself from the pain and dysfunction of her family.

Enjoy!
Collie, perhaps you are right...but possibly her Mom dying while she was so young and the history of her Dad and Mom's past...he was not so inclined to bring Christina up. He started a family with his soon to be wife while still married to Christina.

Can't say that question about the yacht would have ever entered my mind. Interesting though.

Thanks croemer for the link! What precious photos. It makes me want to read more on the family, esp. Alex and Athina.

On Athina's 18th birthday, she was of legal age to take control of half of her inheritance. However, on her 21st birthday in January 2006, she did not take control of the other half or become the president of the Onassis Foundation, as was expected.
The Foundation's Board stated that they would not turn over its control to Athina, who they claimed was unqualified, and furthermore denied that she ever was an heir to the estate of Aristotle Onassis. Athina's lawyers unsuccessfully fought to instate her as President of the Foundation.
Stelios Papadimitriou, President of the Foundation, remarked: "We are not going to turn the Onassis Foundation over to someone who has no connection with our culture, our religion, our language or our shared experiences, and who never went to college or worked a day in her life. She can do whatever she wants with what she inherited from her mother, but not with Onassis's legacy to the Greek people in memory of [Athina's uncle], Alexander Onassis."
"Never argue with a fool. Onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
