Re: Have you ever read something so distrubing.....

@chickenbutt:

I'm the same way...stories about animal cruelty bring me to my knees.  I can't read a book or watch a movie where there might be a scene about a dog being mistreated (or worse)...even though I know it's not real, things like that happen in real life and that makes me sadder than anything else I encounter in the course of my day.  I'm on Facebook and some of my friends are animal activists and rescuers (God bless them for the work they do) but they often post pictures or stories about the animals and the situations they rescue them from and I just can't watch/see/read about them without being emotionally affected.  I do whatever I can to support my local animal shelter but no matter what, we can't save them all and those that slip by just break my heart.

Yes, this happened to me, too until I learned several years ago to not read any articles like that if children or animals are involved. It breaks my heart and I have, like you, been unable to sleep.

I can't watch or read details of abused children or animals either. I find it very difficult to get the image out of my head and I get very down and feel almost ill, or on the verge of a panic attack.

Of course those stories affect those of us who aren't monsters.  I cringe when learning about them all.

Last year a man killed his own infant daughter by having s8x with her - she was three weeks old.  I was angry for days and the authorities requested the media to remove themselves from the story and details.

An aquaintance of mine retired from the bench as a prosecuting attorney for child abuse.  She really is a special person to have such a career.  She just plain told me that those kind of people are wired that way and there isn't any reforming them.  She spoke from years of experience as she would see they had no regrets at all.  They just regretted being caught.

I choose to avoid reading any stories that might upset me.

While I agree with you, I don't care to witness it.  LOL  Seriously, there are many things happening these days that make me physically ill.  So much evil and stupidity.  I try my best to tune out.  Let's put it this way - I'm actually happy I'm the age I am and not any younger.  That's sad, but that's how I feel.

You may not be able to donate to that little girl's needs but you could donate to other children's needs.  Kids are abused every where just like the one story you read about.  It is not unique to AZ.   Find a local shelter and contribute money and time.  Find a local charity that helps kids and donate.   It may not go toward that one little girl but it will help other little girls and boys just like her.

I feel like that about animals and children too.  My dog is a rescue.  I got him 2 years ago when he was 2 yrs old.  He had been neglected and abused.   He didn't even know how to eat or drink out of a bowl!!  He was skin and bones and horribly afraid of everything.    He lives like a king now. He'll never get over everything he went through but he's worlds better than he was.   I can't save all the animals but I can save this one.   I don't know what I'd do without him now.

I'm with @chickenbutt and @curlywhitedog and others who describe very well how they feel when reading stories (real or even fiction) of this type of  cruelty.

I just took a news feed off my favorites because it too frequently has these stories.

@GingerPeach

I've done the same, I take off news feeds and, sadly enough, I have had to remove friends from my feed as well.  I can check back on their pages whenever I want so I can keep up wih their news but I just can't deal with the posts.
