I did one summer in my teens when I went on tour with the Grateful Dead. I was 17 and it was a van with about 6 of my friends.

I did not know you were a Deadhead Smiley Happy

Yep! Summer of '87 I went on tour the whole summer. My first show was in 84 or 85 and while I didn't go on tour again I attended concerts until Jerry died. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown} I have been to 176 Dead shows. I love them! Met a lot of great people I am still friends with and even went to a couple of Rainbow Gatherings. One of my all time favorite bands.

I used to bump into Jerry often in GG Park. He'd hang out with people and then they'd play for free. Janis would show up, also. It was an amazing time... all of the good music came out of SF for a long time.

I took my daughter to Jerry's funeral in GG Park when she was little, it was incredible. I told her she would remember it always.

Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end... Smiley Happy

OMG, that would have been heaven to me. I was born in 1970 and I have often thought I was born way too late. The music of the 60's-70's is probably my most favorite. I love rap and really all kinds of music but when you put all the performers of the 60s and 70s up against other decades, I think there is just such overwhelming talent there compared to others.

There was. It was amazing on all levels, including social change. A friend of mine was at the NY Stonewall riots and then came here for college. A lot of us became instrumental in
social change at that time.

It was really something Smile Even food changed, much more global.

It was an amazing time. I wish I could have been there for so many things.

Your parents let you spend the summer in a van when you were only 17?

Well, I wouldn't say let me. I was a precocious teenager. I left and called them later. They were furious and I do feel terrible about it today and would die if my daughter ever did that. I just turned 45 now and my mother still brings it up.

It wasn't unusual for young people that age, and so many came back when Jerry died, the vans were everywhere. The Deadheads came home for a time Smile

It wasn't unusual but it was in my family. I had a brother and sister that literally never broke the rules. I came 9 and 10 yrs after them and I broke every rule. I do feel bad about a lot that I did because my parents were really reasonable and good parents and I really caused them a lot of worry. A lot. We can laugh about it now, but not then. lol!

Oh, I know. What I meant was that it wasn't unusual for teens to find their way here without parental permission. A lot of the city was organized to find them a place to stay, give them food, even clothes, counseling if necessary. Anyone who needed it was provided a free phone call home to their parents.

I thought we posted together before and you said your father was in the military. I posted that my daughter and her husband were Annapolis grads and you said your brother was.

Yes, my brother was an Annapolis grad. My brother, sister and father were also Marines. My dad was in the military for about 26 yrs, then he worked in the private sector.

I've never lived in my car nor do I know anyone who has. And I don't expect that I will.

Re: Have you ever lived in your car?

Yes, 2 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs. We moved across the country to be near dh's parents to a small town and we're not able to find employment right away. We stayed with his parents until there was an argument and we moved out. There were very few rentals at the time and we didn't have 1st , last deposit etc. We lived in the car for 3 weeks staying in the woods or a local park where we had to be out early since 'camping' wasn't allowed.

Re: Have you ever lived in your car?

As much as I love my car I have never lived in it. I have to say if I ever had a choice on what to pay for first, I pay for my car before my house. I need a car to get to work.
