Re: Have You Ever...Paid For The Order Behind You In Line

I believe that people who give usually have a gut feeling when paying it forward will be accepted for what it is. Either they will take it as a gift or they will pay it forward, again, toward someone truly in need of a little relief.

A selfish person will never give purely for the sake of giving to inspire more of it. It isn't part of their DNA. They have to be the change they want to see or it just isn't going to happen.

There are a lot of people who have a hope and a faith that a God will give them a reward of a forever place to live with their loved ones in eternal happiness but they won't give a dime if they cannot first measure the need of the recipient and even then, they'd determine the need (or their appearance) wasn't sufficient for them to give. I wonder if the words "I never knew you, get away from me" ever cause a re-evalualtion.

Then there are people like Peachy Sue and everyone in-between. Such is the world we live in. I hope the opportunities to pay it forward are at least considered because then it is more likely to happen and the joy is it multiplies and multiplies. That is the reward.

Re: Have You Ever...Paid For The Order Behind You In Line

Last year my 83 year old, fragile, mom, was at a religious theme park in Orlando. She stood in a line to buy lunch. When it came time to pay, the couple behind her in line stepped forward, and asked if she would please allow them to pay for her lunch. Mom was so surprised and grateful. She talked about it for days afterward.

Yes, everyone should do whatever they want to with their own money.

Random acts of kindness can sometimes bring a little sunshine into someone's day. You don't know if that person might really need a lift in spirits or if it just made someone smile.

I don't think that the OP is telling us what to do or even bragging about what she did. She is just reminding us that it's not that hard to make the world a kinder place and it doesn't always involve money.

This being nice to people really seems to be a foreign concept to some.

I wanted to give "inspiration" to others to do some random act of kindness.

For those of you who have not read the entirety of this thread...we did this for a small group of mentally challenged kids.

If I insulted you...I am sorry.

If I inspired you...I am truly truly grateful.

My heart is heavy from all of you who have given your time to post here in my defense...when we stopped for lunch and I read this, I just had to take time to give thanks.

bluegrassbaby: Sometimes we all need a reminder to take just a moment to be kind to another person. I don't think your apology was necessary at all, but it was classy for you to do so.

I think some nerves were struck by your generosity and by the generosity of those who shared doing something for another person. And by that I mean just perhaps they realized they haven't been so good to a stranger, so we see all the attacks to justify that flaw in themselves.

In a world where people are so encapsulated in their own little corner, where there seems to be more annoyance than grace in everyday life, it's not a matter of bragging; it's a matter of remembering that there is a lot of good in the world. With all we see in the news around the world, sometimes a reminder can lift the spirits of those who feel down about the negative in the world.

Remember that old song...."if everyone lit just one little candle"?

You did a very nice thing; never think for a moment that most of us didn't see it for what it was - a nice thing.

Pfft to the naysayers. They are part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Being nice is just another way of showing appreciation for life whether it's paying for someone's coffee because you feel like doing it that day or getting a can down from the top shelf in a grocery store. In a way it's showing that you are not always the number one priority in your life. Letting the guy in back of you and your full grocery cart go ahead of you. What does it cost? 3 minutes of your time while his two items are rung up? Big whoop for you but a time saver for him.

I enjoyed reading your thread. I am rarely surprised at some of the replies on threads but this thread kind of stumped me.

What you did was a very kind thing. Do not let anyone on an internet message board convince you otherwise. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

No. Why would I pay for someone who is shopping in my fairly affluent neighborhood?! I would and do donate to food pantries and other charities that help the needy. Paying for the person next to you in line is simply a way to make yourself feel good and get to see the recipient of your largesse. If I was shopping in a poor area and saw someone struggling to cover the cost of their food order then I would consider paying for them.

It's not done as a "charity" gift.

It's just a nice, easy gesture. The people are BEHIND you...I don't even usually know what they look like!!! Nor do I care to know. It's just to put a smile on someone's face - kind of like finding a dollar bill on the sidewalk.

This has nothing to do with rich or poor!!!!

Then why pay for them? I can make people smile by holding the door for them or, as someone said, reaching an item off a tall shelf that they can't reach (I'm tall so I do that a lot) or a million other things. I don't want anyone paying for me nor I for anyone else. This makes no sense.

It's better to give a smile, a compliment, attention than to play big spender by covering another's bill.

It's not being a big spender to buy a cup of coffee!

It's not showing off.

It's spreading kindness and adding a little surprise to people's lives.

This has been reported in the news repeatedly...not just here in the USA but all over. I have NEVER seen an article where people accepted it for anything except as a kind gesture.

Leave it to the scolds on this board to find something wrong with this!

I would rather discuss ways to brighten peoples lives than discuss "knock out punching" or other mean, nasty behavior.
