Personally, as a ruthless purger, I've never experienced sadness over parting with clothing & other objects, but I do understand how it affects some people.
While I agree it's good to get rid of things we're not going to wear or use anymore, I do not get rid of classic clothing just because it's not the current style. If I love it, and still wear it, I keep it. I still have a few very nice tailored trousers & blazers even though I retired a few years ago. I don't wear them as often as I used to, but I still like dressing up for church & other events. I can also wear my blazers with my jeans to dress them up. I also still own & will continue to wear my dresses. I truly believe we all should do what works for our lifestyles.

No; I have never had a big attachment to clothing. I hate to spend money on clothes, and in the 40 years we've lived in this house, I have yet to fill my closet to capacity with things to wear.
I use my closet to store totes full of curtains and bedding.

I can see what the OP means, but I'm almost the opposite: having given away well-made clothing that wasn't at the moment 'in style' ... and later regretting it. Since newer garments appear to be made of thread one molecule thick, and evaporate after a single washing, the only clothes I give away don't fit or somehow don't feel right on me.

In the past, I knew a seamstress who could make anything I designed, even winter coats. I'd draw something, buy beautiful fabric, silk, wool..., buttons and she would make it to fit me perfectly. After I moved away and over time, I gave them away and now I mourn their loss.
I love fashion, fabric, have since I was three and went shopping with my mother choosing my own clothes.

Not sure that hoarding is the right word---unless you have rooms and rooms filled with something----I have been going through something like sadness from having to give up/get rid of things that I was not ready to part with---due to selling my house and moving to a tiny apartment---have 2 storage units with alot of stuff from a big 2 story house with garages--and not everything would fit in the new place---but gave up many things I still loved---my solution was to take pics of them--- still am sad about it but not as much due to the photos.

I think you hit the nail on the head, hard to give up these nice clothes, but harder to give up the life we had when we wore them. It's over. It's all waning. Just like my income, so are the days of my life, going, going, going.

The fabric is so nice on most things I just hate to let go.

OMG! Fabric? Houndstooth! I disposed of all my Houndstooth jackets. They weren't just black & white. I had multiple colors and they were so classy looking. I don't know what the fabric is called (maybe not "houndstooth"), but some of the jackets looked like they were hand-woven and the fabric was very heavy with a nice lining to keep the shape with square shoulders. When I wore them, I'd get compliments all the time.
Oh well ... in the age of covid, I have no place to wear such items. .. And, I'm retired, ... and I don't have a waistline anymore.
I had a very, very nice houndstooth jacket that I could no longer wear after 2 years secondary to weight loss. I gave it to a non-profit organization run by a lady in our community. I saw that coat on the lady who ran that organization, wearing it. I wanted to walk up to her and say, in front of her business associates "you took that jacket out of the donation pile."

You hit it!
And what a life it was!

@RinaRina I haven't read the replies but I know what you mean. I'm currently in the process of once again cleaning out my closet. My neighbor is taking a lot of donated clothes to use for a fundraiser and after making more space it feels so good to have everything organized with room to spare.
My suggestion is to only keep a very few sentimental items....things that have meaning for you and get rid of things you'll never wear again!

If you don't LOVE it, let it go. Just looking at it on a hanger or in a drawer really isn't enough.
For those items of clothes you may have waited decades to wear again, put them on. I can guarantee that most won't bring you the same joy they once did. I was really surprised when I did this...
If it's sentimental, take a pic of it for memories, then let it go.
I know that this process has worked for me
Now, the only clothes I have been purging the past 2-3 years are ones that are too big because I have been losing weight. I have nothing in the closet or in drawers I don't love. I only have a small pile of clothes I don't fit into...yet. They are pieces that are the next size down so I'll have some that will fit when I reach my goal weight.
You got that right. I must have tried on 25 pairs of pants today. Most of them were rarely worn and some never worn. And it quickly became apparent why I did not wear them. I did not like the way they fit.
So hopefully some lucky lady or more will get a bunch of pristine pants at the thrift store. It feels good when you donate stuff that looks like it was never worn.
@drizzellla I also just got rid of items that still had the tags on...never worn. They looked good on the hanger but not so good on me....what was I thinking when I bought them?!!!
